Ali's Disappearance

Improved Essays
I can hear my daughter, Ali’s, laughter from the bathroom. Her mom is giving her a bath before bedtime while I grab a bite to eat before I go to work. My wife, Bekah, always get on me about keeping our daughter on a routine, especially now that Ali is in school. Some days, are easier than others, but Bekah usually keeps it together somehow. Unfortunately, our daughter is a master at breaking that routine and will do anything to do so. I take a bite out of my sandwich as Bekah walks in. “She’s behaving. I don’t trust it,” she says with an eyebrow raised. “I wouldn’t either. After all, she is related to you and me.” I laugh at the face my wife makes at me. She won’t argue it. She knows it’s true. Our daughter takes after us. We married young.

Jokes about overbearing in-laws are a given in our global culture, indicating a universal understanding that has the ability to transcend categories like race, religion, and nationality. Addressing the relationships of mothers and daughters-in-law in at times comedic, and at others times frustrating, and heartfelt ways, are two books: Annia Ciezadlo’s Day of Honey, and Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicine. Ciezadlo’s novel is the firsthand account of an American war correspondent that marries into a Lebanese family. Annia’s relationship with her mother-in-law, Umm Hassane, begins with mutual respect and love for one another, but transforms into a game of proofs in which the resolution takes time and hard work to achieve. In contrast, Erdrich’s novel is the fictional account of the interconnected…

focused on how white Americans talk about Ali as this icon that transcended race, but Smith makes the point that this distorts the reality of Ali’s life and what he meant to people around the world as well as Americans. He redefined his identity calling for racial unity he declared, “I’m not an American, I’m a black man (Smith, 2017).” Between the 1960-1970 various publications and documentaries portrayed Ali as not a symbol of peace, tolerance, and unity. Most of the time they just point out how Ali shamelessly denigrated Joe Frazier. Ali’s refusal to get drafted in Vietnam made him a unifying force among African Americans and inspired support from nationalists and integrationists.…

When Rahim Khan finally tells Amir the truth about Hassan and Baba a question arises about whether Ali knew that Baba was Hassan's father, although it's not directly said in the novel I think that Ali knew because he saw how much Baba cared about Hassan during all those years and also Ali kind of knew that he wasn't able to have any children because his first wife left him because they couldn't have any children, but later on she was able to have children with another man, which clearly showed Ali that something was wrong with him and there was no way he could have any children, and I think the reason he didn't confront Baba was that he was too loyal to him and also maybe because he knew that he could never have any children; therefore, rather…
