For reasons that defy logic, movie studios continuously attempt to build around the foundation of film classics. Take The Wizard of Oz for example – which in the last 3 years alone has garnered a prequel (Oz the Great and Powerful) and a sequel (Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return). And as you might expect, neither of those productions was able to fully harness the admiration and energy established by the 1939 classic. Sure, there’s plenty of other examples to use, as well – like virtually any sub-par Disney sequel that went straight to video, like Bambi II or The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.…

The Creeper: No Remorse In today’s society, monsters are often associated with fear, the heart pounding, hair raising, gut wrenching fear that makes the stomach turn with terror in every way possible. Most people when asked what they thought to be an accurate description of what a monster’s appearance was, they almost all gave the same answer. Monsters tended to be described as much larger than the average human, grotesque smelling, and being covered in fur, preferably matted, which sounds a lot like the famous urban legend that goes by the name of Bigfoot. ”…

Science Fiction novels depict aliens as semi-human, imperialistic intellects who, despite their technological advancements over human beings, are still inferior. The majority of science fiction novels depicting aliens have them arrive unannounced, H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, for example, (presumably looking for resources that they lack on their home planet) with tools of destruction, progressing the plot when they decimate the Earth, as seen in Robert Emmerich’s Independence Day. The aliens arrive and wage war on Earth, taking all of Earth’s resources and people. However, despite their giant ships, and intimidating weapons, the aliens end up losing the war with the humans, releasing all of their prisoners of war, and disappearing as suddenly as they appeared. This style of book and movie uses these themes to appeal to people’s xenophobic, and western-centric view of the universe.…
