Factors Reinforcing or Helping to Maintain the Mental Health Problem Furthermore, the factors that are reinforcing Alicia’s mental health problem is her parents begging, threatening punishments, and cajole her to listen or do her homework, which is making it worse for Alicia, because the more her parents beg and cajole her to focus, the less responsive she will be. For education decisions, in Alicia’s case, parent-child communication, and discipline, and more effective management strategies, should become a focus of treatment efforts for Alicia.

ADHD is largely a neurobiological disorder, however in Alicia’s case, there were no gross neurological signs being present. During her mental status examination, Alicia’s sensory, perceptual, and cognitive functions were intact, however when she talked to the examiner there were often marked delays in her making verbal responses, to the clinician’s questions. She seemed to be preoccupied with internal thoughts or anxieties, and she often needed a question repeated several times before answering the question. According to neurobiological factors, research shows differences on measures of brain activity during vigilance tests, which leads to under-responsiveness to stimuli/deficits in response inhibition. Alicia is doing well in her cognitive functions and shows no signs of gross neurological signs, however she responds slowing in answering questions and asks constantly to have the question repeated again, and neurobiological factors could be one of the causes for Alicia’s …show more content…
Alicia has been reported by her teacher that she could possibly have ADHD, due to her “spaciness,” lack of focus, motivation and concentration. Her parents struggle to get Alicia to do homework, they would beg, cajole and threaten her to do homework, however the more they push her to do her work, the less responsive she is. In the past, when Alicia was in kindergarten, her teachers would say that she would not listen, and “wandering about.” Now that she is in the third grade, her grades have dropped, her reading performance is poor and she is reluctant to make eye contact and discussing about school. Also, one of the risk factors that is associated with her mental health disability, is her past psychiatric history, where Alicia persisted preschool anxieties when she was young and having worries about nightmares and storms on whether her and her family are safe or not. As for the reinforcing factors, Alicia’s parents beg, cajole, and threaten her in order to stay focus, which does not help her out at all and it always makes it worse for her. In contrast, for the theories, what explained the most in Alicia’s case is the self-regulation deficit, where it has a higher order deficit in the ability to self-regulate, and use thought to direct behavior. Then lastly, for treatments in Alicia’s case, that works best is parent-management training,
