Alicia Jurman's Life During The Holocaust

The Holocaust was a time of sorrow and tragedy for many people living in Europe. The holocaust, lowercased, derives “from the Greek olokaustion, and means ‘an offering consumed by fire’” (Webster Dictionary). Holocaust, with an uppercased ‘H’ refers to the mass destruction of the Jewish people, caused by the Nazi Germans. “A girl of 12, Alicia had suffered enough pain to last a lifetime. Many lifetimes” (Harding). Alicia Jurman was nine-years-old when the Holocaust began, and was thirteen-years-old when it ended, she has lost her family, faced death, scarred, rescued lives, and yet survived. Alicia is part of a caring and loving family. She has four brothers and two loving parents. Her father, Sigmund Jurman, is a businessman and one of the leaders of the Jews. Because she was saved, she in turn could others. The first people she rescued was a Jewish mother and her two children. She took them back to Wujciu, where they stayed for a while. She also nursed a 16-year-old Jewish boy back to health after he stepped on a mine and lost part of his leg.
