Alice begins a new journey, through the Looking-glass world, taking her on an expedition through a difficult game of chess. Alice starts out in the world by meeting up with the Red Queen, who shows her the number of many brooks running straight across from side to side, dividing the area up into squares as Alice realizes it is a giant game of chess (Carroll, 131-134). The more Alice sees of the game the more she wants to be a part of it. The Red Queen puts Alice up to the test to see if she can successfully make it through the game. In the novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, Alice discovers that she is living in a chess game through the people she meets, the directions she goes, and the events that lead her to success. In the Looking-glass world Alice runs into characters right from the beginning that give her knowledge that she is in a game of chess. Alice is wondering through the garden of live flowers when the flowers inform her that the Red Queen is coming her way. Alice goes on her way when she meets up with the Red Queen, who began telling her to be more proper and soon as she saw her (131). The queen is already helping Alice become a better pawn, which will help her when she gets across the board to become a queen. Alice is learning from the Red Queen already as if the Red Queen knows she will become a queen. Alice is on her way, as a pawn, to become a queen, with the help of the people she meets along the way.
