Dee’s personality and background are some of the main things you see in the story. Dee has been running from her poverty life from since she was a child. Dee stood from afar ad watched the Johnson’s house burnt down. Her mother asks her “why don’t you do a dance around the ashes? She hated that house so much” (Walker 495). The demolished house and Dee’s nonchalant attitude represents her detachment from her family and their prized possessions. Dee separates herself from her family as soon as she is old enough and left for school. She achieves whatever she set her mind to. Dee likes having a feeling of superiority over others. she has always envisioned herself as someone of a higher class, which is above her family and that of her past.
