We opted to view the film Alice Sweet Alice, directed by Alfred Sole for three reasons. The first, and primary reason that we selected this films is that it is a part of the slasher-film genre, which is our favorite genre of horror films. These films generally have a more fascinating, twisted, and gore-filled storyline then their horror-film counterparts. It is often said that one cannot judge a book by its cover, however, in relation to horror films, the trailer often gives an audience good insight on what to expect. The trailer for this film grabbed our attention and never let go. The third reason that we selected this film above others

Films are universally known to generalize individuals especially in relation to their gender. Though they contain different themes, movies follow a similar pattern; the beautiful, innocent woman is recused by an attractive, strong male. In Carol J. Clover’s article, “Her Body, Himself: Gender in the Slasher Film”, she explores a new emerging pattern in horror cinema where the woman herself becomes the hero. Clover’s purpose in writing her article is to help her audience become familiar with the idea of cross gender identification. This is where the male audience is compelled to associate themselves with the strong independent female.…

In this film, Laura (1944) we are introduced to a group of corrupt and fittingly shady upper-class social order types. The focus is on particular conventions of content, like themes or settings and/or form, including structure and style (Goodykoontz & Jacobs 2014). This film will be critiqued by the author through the lens of the genre theory (AMC, n.d.). The genre theory allows critics to take a short cut to categorize films. The director woks with the time-period and has a vision and that includes the audience he wishes to engage.…

Traditionally almost all horror films have focused on treating women in a negative manner. Regardless, from time to time there have been strong female characters that were represented in horror movies. Mehls argues that since most horror films target young adults, some of these women went beyond the traditional roles, and became role models for women. Over recent decades the ways in which women are represented in horror movies, and the means by which women have successfully come out of the shadows has altered the genre of horror films. For the most part, such changes can be attributed to bigger societal movements such as the Second and Third Wave Feminism.…

The Darkness and Sorrow of Pan’s Labyrinth Today’s fairytales are often transformed into morality tales to fit our current values and are often stripped of the darkness and sorrow that is surrounding the story. However, this is not a common occurrence and it has been done over years, so that the more gruesome fairytales, with dark, and gruesome scenes, would be more suitable for younger audiences. In “Pan’s Labyrinth” Guillermo Del Toro is able to incorporate those gruesome and darker scenes to “depicts a struggle between good and evil” (2). In Mike Perschon review of “Pan’s Labyrinth”, he talks about embracing those appalling, sorrowful, and cruel scenes because “Without those harsh elements the film would be a milquetoast modern fairytale”…
