Throughout the novel, Morrie demonstrates his “theory of detachment”. “... But detachment doesn't mean you don't let the experience penetrate you. On the contrary, you let it penetrate you fully. That's how you are able to leave it.” (Albom 103). What he is talking about is he will experience any emotion, whether it is grief, happiness, love or fear. After giving himself a certain amount of time, he detaches from the emotion and moves on with his day. This process allows him to not hold in his emotion, but also not dwell on it for an unhealthy period of time. He can utilize this to cope with his illness; he even said that every morning he lets himself have a good cry to let out his sadness and self pity, then he lets go of it and goes on with
