Fountain remembers the early years of slavery, he was 101 years old during his narrative. Fountain, like Alice Gaston was also born into slavery and had a master who he recalls treated him fairly. During Fountain’s time in slavery he witnessed many slaves be sold from previous owners. Fountain says he was never sold since he was a good slave, but reiterates “if you was bad and mean and they didn't want to beat you and knock you around, they'd sell you what to the, what was call the nigga trader” (Fountain Hughes, 1949).
Fountain didn’t enjoy the life of slavery even while having a master who wasn’t very hard on him. He feels as if slaves were no more than dogs to the masters of that time. While reminiscing Fountain said if he ever had to be a slave again he would take a gun and just end it all. He felt that in the eyes of their masters they were no more than dogs and that dogs in today’s world have it better than slaves did back then (Fountain Hughes, 1949).
