At the beginning charlie was mentally retarded. Then he had an operation where he began to become smarter over time. He went from understanding things as a child, to understanding and dealing with things in a way different matter. He was becoming smarter and smarter without even knowing he was. He became so smart that he was smarter than the scientists that did the operation on him. He reached the top of his potential, but doing so he also became more of an outcast as well. He started to notice that his friend algernon was changing. He started to notice the algernon was losing his intelligence. Knowing so he continued the operation, to see if he could find their mistake. He was using that last bit of his intelligence to find out the mistake.
