Algebra Necessary Andrew Hacker Summary

I believe that the teaching and learning of Algebra and Geometry in high school are of most importance and is some of the most important knowledge you can obtain throughout your life. For the majority of people, math is seen as an unnecessary roadblock in their education. After all, barely anyone in the real world uses math like Algebra and Geometry in their daily life, so why should we bother teaching it. I would argue saying that even if you never use this math ever again in your life, and all it was to you in high school was a failing grade, it still helped you in ways you don't notice. Most students in high school these days see no reason that they are being taught Algebra and Geometry. They say that they will never use the knowledge they are being taught every again outside of the classroom and in the real world. Most of these people are right though, they will never have to use the skills that they are being taught in high school math ever again. These students see this point and agree …show more content…
(Andrew Hacker), I can start to dissect his argument. The first thing many others and I noticed when reading his article is the clear lack of understanding he has about the topic he is writing about, specifically the mathematical topics he mentions. “He is simply wrong about his first example. There is a good reason to study both polynomial functions and equations (parametric or otherwise), provided it is done properly”(Dr. Keith Devlin.) Hacker also mentioned a term called vectorial angle which isn't even part of most curriculums. Another problem many people have found out about Hacker is that he is not very well educated on the topic of math not even close to what would be considered a mathematician, which is the type of person I would expect to write such an article on this subject. I don't have any issues with Hacker, he clearly just wants to share his opinion but I don't see it a being in the best interest of

“Love, Internet Style” is an outgoing article that can make one question if what they are doing romantically is correct. The author brings up many good points to back up his side of the argument. Brooks wrote this article in order to convince readers that online dating could be the key to strengthen courtship. Some readers might believe Brooks successfully used rhetorical strategies to prove his point, but in my case I believe he did not. I personally feel that with some of the points made he had no clue what he was talking about.…

Today, many adults view word problems as the least favorite aspect of math problems; however, that may all change in the future due to today’s students receiving thorough instruction on word problems through the use of teachers using the Common Core Initiative. In order for students to appreciate word problems they must first understand what the problem is asking them solve and they must also understand the information that the word problem has given them. The eight mathematical practices teach students to understand math problems and to analyze the problems. The first step in helping students with math is to show them how to think mathematically.…

In 2009 the United States of America tried to create an equal learning system nationwide that is now a set and standard learning procedure about what children should be learning in school for future college and career readiness called Common Core Standards. However, not every single state uses the standards because they are based on the best of the state's academic goals that have already been accomplished. Common Core Standards have had a big impact on public schools, teachers, and families across the country and are helping children of America become more prepared for college and their future careers, but the Common Core Standards are making it worse for the children that cannot meet the standards of the schools' goals. Like with any…

Students who identify with gender or racial minority groups may see their group membership as an obstacle to academic success. Additionally, other theories suggest that the academic achievement minority-group children are jointly affected by cultural conflict both inside and outside of school (Nasir & Hand, 2006). These students may face obstacles such as nonsupport at home, parents who do not value education, or lack of relationships with teachers and peers that encourage learning (Nelson, 2014). A study by Marsh (2008) suggests that changing the organizational systems and structures of a classroom could have a positive impact on both students of color and students living in poverty.…

I am sure that all of us have had a moment where we panic because we forgot about a quiz and we didn’t study for it. But have you been handed a study guide and you aren’t able to do anything on it? In middle school, I took Advanced Geometry and Honors Algebra 2 together in the same year. In geometry class, we were just given a worksheet, and we were expected to understand how to do it from looking at the examples provided at the top of the worksheet.…

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are probably the biggest thing to hit public education in the United States in recent years (Neuman & Roskos, 2013). Common Core has left one group largely in the dark; parents (Neuman & Roskos, 2013). Only forty-five percent of public school parents had heard of Common Core (Obrien, 2014). This is only hearing about it, and does not include understanding what it is. Since parents do not understand Common Core, they have a lot of misunderstandings.…

Mathematics has changed my life by helping me to become educated and helping me to understand the world and its wonders at a deeper level. It also changed my view of the world by allowing me to analyze the world at a deeper way including how the world works as a function of science, the laws of physics and how the human body works. I am sure mathematics can be applied even to areas where I am not conscious of…

Math and science is important for all ages, however, it is the foundation in the early stages of childhood that builds skills in other areas. Philosophically, math and science is defined differently. One studies patterns, while the other studies nature. Although they have differences, both subjects are the most closest to each other. In education they are connected and should be integrated with each other and other subjects.…
