Photos are a record of fleeting moments. Photos tell a story through the eyes of the photographer. Black and white photography can express a story that color photography simply cannot. Thus, when color is removed, the viewer can get an enhanced impression of the models personality and what the photo says about the relationship between the artist and the viewer. Alfred Stieglitz was an inspirational photographer who understood how to capture moments that expressed his feelings towards his models, specifically toward his model Georgia O’Keefe. Likewise, I attempted to express my feelings toward my model. However, my relationship with my model was not of sexual nature, while Stieglitz’s relationship with Georgia O’Keefe was. “Alfred Stieglitz …show more content…
I feel that he is a strong, smart and compassionate young boy. He is at an age where he is watching his father's every move. He is watching his father, to get an idea of where he stands in the world. He is fun and energetic when he wants to be, but then he is also calm, serious and strong when he wants to be. He has just been forming his personality. However, I wanted to portray him as the strong boy he is. He has been observing his fathers strength and has decided strength is a good quality. In the photo, he is not smiling, but he is also not mad. His hands are balled up ever so slightly, showing his strength. Additionally, his stance portrays his strength. The photo I chose best represented his strength. I wanted to produce a straight photo that showed only him and his strength with nothing in the background to distract the viewer’s eyes. Similar to Stieglitz’s photographs I wanted to choose a photo with multiple TONES of different ACHROMATIC and CHROMATIC values. Also, I attempted to Show TEXTURE as Stieglitz did, specifically ABSTRACT TEXTURE in the models hair. I COLLAGED a reproduction of the photo I chose by cutting out small pieces of newspaper, organizing the pieces of paper by their

An image may show bias and can affect perceptions of a person by using a certain pose and angle, color choices, and additional props. In the article Why Time's Trump Cover is a Subversive Work of Political Art, it tells the reader to look at the portrayal of Trump, and to notice how the colors appear slightly muted, which creates a vintage effect, which the author says can remind the reader of World War Two, segregation, and the Cold War. The color choices of Trump's picture remind the reader of tough times. Color choices can create a connection between a person and a memory, whether it be good or bad, resulting in an association of the person with good or bad feelings. Pose also affects how the reader sees a person.…

If Lisette Model took up photography as a way of earning a living, it is also true that she always fought for her own subjects, rather than simply carry out the assignments given by editors. She believed that for a photograph to be successful its subject had to be something that “hits you in the stomach.” This could be something familiar or something unfamiliar. For Model, the camera was an instrument for probing the world, a way of capturing aspects of a permanently changing reality that otherwise we would fail to see. Model always said that she looked but did not judge.…

The portraits are of a five individuals portraying an emotionless expression. The emotions will live in the stories, not in the facial expressions of the models. An emotion was assigned to each photo through these stories.…

Communication theories help create an understanding of different perspectives happening in particular events. I recently went through a critical incident that made me realize the differences in photography norms and how tension can create contradictions in my relationships. During October of last year, my sister-in-law contacted me to take photos for her family, including my oldest brother and their newborn. The photos were special because they only had a few of them together from a tripod, but were not professionally done by another photographer. We arranged on a date and time, aimed for the morning, in the backyard of my parents’ house.…

Photographs can use subjects to portray a certain message and feeling with in the photo. In 2000 there was an exhibit called 'Watchful Eyes: The Gaze in Contemporary Photography' at the Edelman Gallery that showed exactly which ways portraits of people have been approached by different artists and the meanings behind each approach. This exhibit presented categories of images of people who share their lives through a glance, gaze or gesture, with or without their knowledge. These type of photographs give a greater understanding about how we see others and ourselves.…

Irving Penn knew how to capture the expression of the person posing in front of his lens. He wanted to recreate the same irreducible force you could find in paintings. His goal was to catch his subjects’ expression. That’s why he would encourage his models during photo shoots, so that he could reveal their true selves. « The studio became, for each of us, a kind of neutral zone.…

Throughout the centuries, art has been one of the most valuable forms of communication for all sorts of people wanting to express themselves. More precisely, painterly portraiture allowed artists to offer an even deeper glimpse into the souls of their subjects, as well as their own, for anyone willing to take the time and look. As people have evolved over the centuries, art has progressed in a parallel motion. The style, subject, and intent of a portrait provide details into the lives of the subject, the artist, as well as the socioeconomic environment surrounding the two. After the French Revolution, portraiture evolved from the Neoclassical style to the Romantic style, to the Realistic style, to the Impressionist style, and finally to the…

This image shows Mother Mary talking to her Mother St.Anne. I love this image because as an religious kid, this photograph demonstrates my love for my religion. The quality I like best about this photo is how I edited it. I loved the way I kept the background the same yet I lighten up Mary and St.Anne. The one and only thing I would do differently would be to experiment with the contrast and the brightness a little more or even try this photo in black and white.…

In John Berger’s book Understanding a Photograph, he argues that there is a distinct discontinuity between an individual viewing a photo, and the actual photo. A picture solely preserves a single moment in time, and while they often act to tell a story, the medium cannot be fully interpreted without knowing the story that surrounds it. Although there is a definite connection between a photograph and the narrative that corresponds with it, the photo is only a visual aid for the story; it does not tell us everything like the written piece does. I agree with Berger’s argument that photographs can shape the written story that is told about a single character through invoking various responses, emotions, feelings, and interpretations between the…

The resulting disjunction—between words that refer to an all-too-human state and images devoid of people—suggests the inherent limitations of both photography and language as “descriptive systems” to address a complex social problem.” This quote represents how much of Rosler’s emotion she puts into her work to create a piece which not only shows social states, but causes the reader to look further into the words and writings next to it, which creates a stronger connection between the audience and the empty photographs. By taking out the person/people whom the work is surrounding, it leaves you wondering many things about the person, creating your own image in your head of their life and how you perceive them to be. It could almost be classed as a game, being given a setting and words that represent the people within that setting, and having to create your own scene.…
