When discussing the creation and implementation of the I-94 freeway women are often left out of the discussion. Likewise, when discussing the aftermath of I-94 the businesses that were lost are left out. In the play “The Highwaymen”, put on by History Theater, not a single women was in the play, and there was no resolution to the loss of Timothy Howard’s barber shop. Women played an instrumental role in the Freeway Revolt, but in the context of Rondo their roles in the community are not told and left out of the narrative surrounding I-94. Women represent the heart of many communities and by denying their stories to be shared an entire section of Rondo history is being lost.…

Julia Alvarez’s poem On Not Stealing Louise Bogan’s The Blue Estuaries conveys the speaker’s discoveries—the book, her love for and confidence in reading poetry and her girl’s voice--as surprising and serendipitous. This is conveyed through the use of imagery, figurative language and selection of detail. Imagery is used in the poem to convey the speaker’s discoveries: her love for and confidence in reading poetry. The poem begins with the speaker stumbling upon the book, which she says surprised her. The speaker goes in depth to describe the book, noting its “swans gliding on a blueback lake… posed on a placid lake, your name blurred underwater sinking to the bottom.”…

In the first stanza there is a series of repetition used ¨I was angry with my friend¨ (1) and ¨ I was angry with my foe¨ (3). This put a lot of emphasis on how the poet was angry or angered by his foe. Then you look at the next stanza, the poet uses a lot of metaphor deciding how he was enraged and it would keep growing. In line 5 and 6 he wrote ¨I watered it in fears / [and] night and morning with my tears¨ this is a personification because fears can not water anything and this could be seen as a metaphor to related fears and tears as a fuel to his rage the is growing night and day. Also in line 7 and 8 ¨I sunned it with smiles/ and with soft deceitful wiles¨ is a personification because smiles and wiles can not give trees or plants light…

The poem is divided into three stanzas but it is debatable that the stanza in between the first and the last one is in fact two stanzas divided by two lines, twelve and thirteen that are indented. This indentation not only expresses the disorientation of the structure of the poem, but it also affects the reader’s flow of reading which in turn may cause them to stumble in their eye movement as they gaze at the…

“The Knight” by Adrienne Rich establishes the conflict between how we, as a society, view people externally versus how people view themselves internally. By using figurative language, including extended metaphor, imagery, and anaphora, Rich imposes the idea of how we shouldn’t expect people to be exactly how we see them. The entire poem is nothing more than an extended metaphor. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that is developed over the course of a body of text. In “The Knight” the speaker compares the knight to people who go through life trying to be brave when they are actually dead on the inside.…

Poetry is a very beautiful and unique form of literature, but it often is given a bad reputation. The main reason being is people overanalyze it, instead of taking in the beauty of it. Billy Collins’s poem “Introduction of Poetry” explains how people overanalyze and take away from the beauty of a poem. The speaker suggests ways of reading poetry that allow the reader to understand the poem, but not take away from the beauty of it. Billy Collins quotes “I ask them to take a poem / and hold it up to the light / like a color slide” (lines 1-3) meaning take the poem that is being read and analyze it, but do not analyze it to the point you loose sight of the beauty or “colors”.…

I became attracted to Loy’s poem after reading her biography because the poetry she wrote broke away from the traditional male dominate poetry. She was controversial and represented modern feminism during her time. Loy’s voice added diversity to the modernism by the structure and bewildering word choices presented in her poem Love Song. Love Song can be easily seen to be inspired by her real life casthopic experience with love through her failing marriage and two affairs during the time it was written in 1915.…
