What initially seemed to be a regular police raid on a random June night in 1969 turned into riots lasting several evenings, with an impact that would continue to this day. Often people divide the history of the United States’ gay rights movement into two epochs- “before Stonewall” and “after Stonewall”. Accordingly, this distinction illustrates the Stonewall Riots’ individual importance for gay rights even as it was not the first event to highlight the injustices of homophobia. Despite its relatively late appearance in the timeline of gay rights history, the riots were the first demonstration of homosexual activism to be celebrated on a large scale and remain in large part the most commemorated gay rights demonstration. Additionally, the riots…

He published a book titled Sexual Behavior in the Human Male which became a huge success but his research methods, especially given the time period, were viewed as questionable and sometimes even unethical. The movie Kinsey tells the story of how he became interested in human sexuality and the beginning of his research in the subject. What was defined as normal sexual behavior in the 1940s usually very modest behavior and was sometimes very taboo to talk about openly. This is due to the many improvements for LGB people that came from the riots such as laws preventing discrimination, which lead to other improvements that made acts such as hate crimes illegal. One of these improvements is advocacy groups, these were formed through “intense discussions” regarding civil rights for LGB people that occurred during the riots in New York. The first advocacy group formed was the Gay Liberation Front . This name was chosen due to its ties with anti-imperialism in Vietnam and Algeria . Following the Stonewall riots LGB people across America started to organise groups for gay rights and these groups were formed in almost all major cities .…

One organization in particular, the “Student Homophile League” formed at Cornell University in 1968 laid the groundwork for gay and lesbian independence. Cornell University wasn’t the only university to develop these organizations. Many other universities across the country began to mobilize and join the militant groups of activism for equal rights. It was not easy for students to form organizations such as these despite acceptance from other non-gay groups. Cornell University refused to grant SHL approval until they received a list of all members.…

The early morning hours on June 28th 1969 marked the beginning of a new era for the gay rights movement. The Stonewall Inn, at the time one of the few establishments that openly welcomed the gay demographic, was raided by the police. Subsequently, a riot erupted amongst the arrested crowd – the first time that the gay population had protested a police raid. The incident incited several more violent demonstrations in the following days, which have been famously dubbed as the Stonewall riots. The Gay Activist Alliance group wanted to channel the power of the Stonewall Riots into efficient power that could get results. The group on December 21,1969 created bylaws and a constitution in which they declared their rights to have what other humans have such as the right to their body, their right to love who they wanted to love, and right to express themselves how they seem fit. The Activist Alliances group had a more calm and sensitive approach compared to the Front members. They performed sit ins, rallies, and even lobbied for their rights. Needing examples of sociologists using methods? Check out these below... Laud Humphreys (1970) conducted a study called Tearoom Trade: his hypothesis was to investigate homosexual (gay) encounters occurring in public toilets throughout the USA. He observed men using public toilets: those who had homosexual encounters he followed home to find out their martial status and used the pretext that he was doing a health survey. His covert observations meant that participants hadn't consented to the investigation and his entire investigation is flawed with ethical issues surrounding the moral injustice of lying to potential homosexual candidates and using the assumption that they were in fact homosexuals.…

Homosexuality was a term that was created by German psychologist, Karl-Maria Benkert in the late 19th century (Pickett, 2015). Ovid was a Roman poet that focused on various Greek myths for a Roman audience, which included homosexuality, as a part of his major work, Metamorphoses. The idea of same-sex attraction and other types of sexuality were seen in many ancient civilizations, but with no concrete term to describe the relationships. Homosexuality was seen more, and more widely excepted, in the male population compared to the female population, in which there were not many records of this occurring. Ovid portrayed homosexual relationships, for both men and women, in his versions of various myths in his works, in which power dynamics and societal…

For my second written assignment I picked the movie Kinsey, a biographical drama of the life of a doctor who stirred much controversy during the decades of the 40’s and 50’s, as he studied the sexual behaviors of humans. The movie starts with Professor Kinsey being interviewed about his sexual history. During the interview, are flashbacks from Kinsey’s childhood and adolescence. The young child years show his father talking about modern inventions and demonizing them because they were the starting point of carnal sin, it also shows his experience as an adolescent as a member of the Boy Scouts relating to masturbation and a late teenage scene shows Kinsey disappointing his father by his chosen vocational intentions.…

Participants also completed 29- item scale Buss and Perry’s (1992) Aggression Questionnaire which was implemented to evaluate an general…
