Alex's Journey Into The Wild

Improved Essays
Before, Alex’s death he carved into a piece of wood stating “Jack London is King”. The carving was found near the site of McCandless’s dead body. This is a coincidence because Alex ended up dying because of journeying into the wilderness and Jack London has portrayed the wild as a horrifying and harmful place. The autopsy report displayed how Alex’s muscles became withered and how his body lost most of its fat content from being in the wild without any supplies. This epigraph proved the dangers and darkness the wild holds and how Alex’s chances of survival was low from the beginning.

In chapter 18 page 189, Krakauer shows an epiphany that McCandless made in the end of his journey. He realized that “Happiness is only real when shared” when he previously believed that “You're wrong if you think the joy of life comes from human relationships.” This line was really meaningful to me because it was the part of his life where he realized that he can’t share his happiness if there is no one there to share it with which made him regret leaving all of his loved ones behind. He also learned to forgive. He forgave his parents and by the end he even returned to his actual name meaning that he was ready to return to society…

It seems throughout the poem, Alexie is looking back through flashbacks of times he has had and then focuses back at what he is doing in the moment. In the beginning, Alexie talks about how it is mostly the darker ones who sit in the chair when the white people die. He refers to the Indian man as an example claiming he tried to win a bet by shoving his fist down someone’s throat. Alexie goes on to say that Indians are always gambling which is a typical stereotype of Indians. Alexie states the Indian does not want much for his last meal, just a baked potato, salad, and tall glass of ice water.…

Professor and author Roderick Nash describes an ideal in which the wilderness serves as a place for those stressed over the actions of mankind to take refuge from everything occurring while remaining at peace with themselves. So much freedom exists in seclusion that it offers a stage on which humans have the opportunity to express themselves freely with “melancholy or exultation.” However, interactions with several elements of the outside community still have the ability to take place in the wild. While Nash correctly asserts that the simplicity of the wilderness helps the individual escape from society, one cannot possibly achieve complete freedom from man and his works. Literature often uses a character’s thoughts to depict the craving for freedom in the wilderness.…

Juxtaposition reveals the relationship between death and innocence, and how similar they are; innocence connotes a sense of life and purity. The relationship of death and innocence, which can be seen through grotesque imagery and diction, creates an emphasized sense of mortality within Tim O’Brien. The Vietnamese foot soldier he kills reveals O’Brien’s emotions and thoughts on death and mortality as well as the innocence that goes along with it: “Along the trail there were small blue flowers shaped like bells. The young man’s head was wrenched sideways, not quite facing the flowers, an even in the shade a single blade of sunlight sparkled against the buckle of his ammunition belt” (121). Grim imagery in this text displays a corpse splayed on the ground next to dainty delicate flowers.…

Receiving Help Sherman Alexie's poem, "This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona," uses flashbacks, sensory description, dialogue, and other literary tools to illustrate the importance of reunion. In the story, Alexie demonstrates how the news of the death of Victor's father affected him. He says that even though he has not seen his father in years, “there was still a genetic pain, which was as real and immediate as a broken bone,” (Alexie 11). Victor’s father had died and now Victor has to travel to Phoenix, Arizona to recover his father's ashes, money, and his old pickup truck.…
