Alex's Client Feedback Case Study

Alex’s Client Feedback for Keni

Similar to last session I think it was generally a good session. Being in the client’s chair was still awkward for me, but less so than last time, I feel. Kenny also seemed more comfortable and confident in her role as helper, which made me feel good because I hate having people around me uncomfortable.

As I said in my last feedback, Keni has a ton of great potential in the helper role and now that she is feeling more confident in that role and we have met and chatted before I see that only growing. Kenny has taken the skills we have learned about in class and has made them her own, for example, she utilized smart goals to challenge me to plan ahead and envision success which was useful.

Keni also obviously put in a lot of energy into learning and implementing other helping skills like effective use of minimal encouragers and reflecting affect. These also helped me feel more at ease. I could see in her face that she was not only more comfortable but she did authentically care about what I was saying.

For me I am more extroverted and feel better and more at ease when I am speaking with a person with energy that mimics my own. That is, similar the way I feel when I talk with Racheal we are on similar wavelengths and that helps me “shake off the dust” so to speak. I recognize that Keni and I are very different people and that it is probably difficult for her to jive with me in that sense. Just something to be conscious of.

In summary, the session was very positive. Keni was great at allowing me the freedom to open up and to talk, as I needed to. Keni is still very genuine and authentic and obviously cares very deeply about my experience. My challenges for Keni is to get some more practice at executing the skills we are talking about in class so that you can execute them more naturally. She is still an outstanding and inspiring person; I want to see that person in session

Session five was a big stepping stone for me, I believe I asked questions that guided her and properly validated her feelings, not to mention my powerful use of silence during the whole session. This reflection will shift gears from how I originally lay out my reflections. I usually express the goals I said I would work on and then share the progress I made during the succeeding session. However, I shared my uncertainty about where to take our session after the last one. I believe this doubt helped session five unfold the way it did.…

but I took a deep breath and allowed my client to share with me something that had been bothering him. I showed Matt that I was listening to him and understanding they way he felt. I made sure that he realized his feelings were ok for him to have and allowed him to share something that appeared to me he had been trying to hold in. After doing this I feel like Matt felt that he could trust me and that I was being genuine and present in our session. Although overwhelming to me I felt that this moved our counseling session in a positive direction.…

Role Play Lab Reflections What was this experience like for you as a therapist or one of the members of the couple? The experience for me as the wife during the role play simulation was good. At the beginning, it was kind of slow to start. I felt like I didn’t want to come on too strong in the beginning of the session, especially since Nick was supposed to be the one with the anger problem. It didn’t take long for me to get comfortable with the character I was pretending to be.…

During the first session, Katherine appears to be unprepared at first clip: 17:37minutes. I have learned that I should schedule personal timing and session so I will be well prepared to start my first session smoothly. This will help my client to start to feel comfortable and build trust on me and not judging me as Adam ask Katherine “I’m your first patient, aren’t I?” (Williams, 2015) and she say “No, not at all” from that I can see and tell that Adam already felt lost trust at first with her because she has less experience. Even though this will be my first client I must be well prepared and confident so my client will be in the same way.…

Day 2 at PPI went REALLY fast then I expected. I was so excited to be back on the 4th floor and to see how my patient from Tuesday was doing. When I arrived on the unit I got to attend 3 o’clock group with other client. I was looking for my client when we entered, but she was not in a group, so I decided to seat and wait for her. That group was for music, but little different than the group that I attend on my first day.…

How did you feel about the conversation? I have never experienced therapy, but always had imagined how the process would be. I pictured a couch and a therapist on a fancy chair like in the movies, and I would just lay there and vent about my problems. Initially, I was very excited to see someone whom I can speak with and possibly help me resolve my issues, but that excitement did not last long. Anxiety kicked in as I got a phone call from the therapist, informing me that we would start next week. I started to become very nervous about the whole client-therapist relationship, for what if I did not connect with.…
