In the middle, the king chooses his younger brother to be the heir instead. This causes Alexos to slightly insane and push his brother, Teo, down the lake. Teo is Alexos’s younger brother who absolutely loves Alexos. He is eight years younger than him but is very kind and understanding of everything around him. I decided to choose this book for my book project because I saw that it was a new book in the school library. I didn’t quite have a book to read, so I picked it up and read the back. I wasn’t quite sure about it at first, but I didn’t have time to think. I checked it out and, to my surprise, I really enjoyed it. I basically went in blind and I’m glad I did. There were many twists that I didn’t expect and the characters were just very enjoyable to read about. My favourite scene from this book was when Teo and Alexos were reunited again. Though Teo did hate him for a good while and kicked him down in anger, they were able to overlook Alexos’s wrongdoings and become great brothers again. I enjoyed this book even though I found some flaws in the writing, such as rushing the ending and pushing the moral too much. Then again, these things could have been a writing choice and could be Diane Stanley’s writing style. I did enjoy reading about the drama and adventure this story conveyed through its plot and I hope to read another book

When one is separated from those they are supposed to be closest with, they will often look to fill that emotional gap with some form of self expression of comfort. As in Cisneros’ personal essay “Ghosts and Voices: Writing from Obsession”, the distance I lived from my family, both literally and metaphorically, helped to shape myself and my voice. Since both my parents originally hailed from Montreal, the majority of my family remains there to this day. While I am quite close with everyone, there has always been a gap between our existences. Furthermore, being the only openly LGBTQ+ member of my family served to form a greater divide between myself and my inherently Irish Christian loved ones.…

A traditional tale of a young girl in search of her father would morph into the picturesque narrative, filled with comical characters, easy adventure, and a heartwarming conclusion where the daughter and father happily reunite. However, in Fran Ross’s Oreo, the plot radically deviates from the conventional narrative of Greek mythology to include black characters in a typically white narrative. Oreo goes on a quest to learn the “secret of her birth,” from her father, Sam Schwartzes (Ross 37). However, her quest is anything but typical. When Christine meets her father, the reunion with Sam is met with disappointment and unanswered questions.…
