For some parents, the name of their baby determines what he/she becomes. My parent’s reasoning for naming me Alex is because of Alexander The Great. The meaning of my names is comparable to my namesake, who was an ancient leader who defended his empire. Although there are some aspects of my name that I can relate to, there are others to which I cannot.
According to behindthename.com, Alexander means “defending men”. I like to think that this is true since I play center defender when playing soccer. A few years ago, I was playing in an incredibly close game on a dusty field. The other team got on a breakaway with me trailing close behind, they slid a ground ball past my keeper and I sprinted to save the ball. I slid on the ground to extend my body as far as possible to knock the ball away from the goal, and I spotted the other team immediately going for the rebound. People paying attention to me are my kryptonite, and anyone becoming aware of me makes the Metal Gear Solid alert sound play in my head. For example, I was forced to partake in a reenactment of a traditional Vietnamese marriage for a cultural show. As my stage partner and I walked on stage, I felt my palms get sweaty, my knees started to weaken as the performance carried on. The gazes of people felt like an increasingly heavy weight as I linked arms with my performance partner and finished our part. Luckily, that was all I had to do for the performance because my stomach felt like Hurricane Harvey had just plowed through it.
