Alexander Hamilton was one of the three authors of the Federalist Papers, a series of articles written from October 1787 to August 1788 that argued in favor of the Constitution. The series became a classic work of democratic government. The first article, “The Federalist, No. 1,” was written by Hamilton. The series helped the country establish a Constitution, which we still live by in the present. Almost 175 years later in 1962, a student activist group stated a political manifesto that started a new movement of the American Left. A quote explains Hamilton’s reasons to establish the Constitution, “I am convinced, that this is the safest course for your liberty, your dignity, and your happiness” (Hamilton 66). Hamilton persuades the reader that the Constitution is the best option for them obtain the basic needs they want to achieve in America. The people came to America to obtain liberty, dignity, and happiness. In their past lives, the first Americans wouldn’t have liberty since there would be a tyranny controlling them. Also, they wouldn’t have dignity since the tyrannical had all the power to control and abuse them. Basically, the Americans wouldn’t be happy in Europe since they aren’t treated with the respect, dignity, and liberty they deserve. Hayden discussed the problems that the African-Americans suffered from, “...the permeating and victimizing fact of human degradation, symbolized by the Southern struggle against racial bigotry…” (Hayden 561). The African-Americans suffered from being considered inferior by the White community. They had to go through inequality, disrespect, and unhappiness. The African-American community in the South suffered from racial intolerance from the White community. All of these problems the African-Americans had to go through made them unhappy with life. They had no rights, no power, and no respect at all. Hamilton’s idea of achieving a happy America isn’t being achieved since the African-Americans are not happy with their lifestyle. The Constitution isn’t delivering the African-Americans their liberty, dignity, and happiness they were promised. They are part of America but the Constitution isn’t considering them to be part of America as the the rest of the white Americans. America needs to give the African-American community the basic needs to be happy in America. All American citizens deserve the same right and benefits, even if the person has different beliefs, race, or religion.
