I’m Minasha Gunarathna, and I love Hamilton; An American Musical. Hamilton first made its off-Broadway debut in February 2015, with its first performance being sold out. Just 6 months later, the play was transferred to Broadway in August, where it debuted at the Richard Rodgers Theater. Hamilton was written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, winning him a Pulitzer Prize for the musical. In 2016, Hamilton received a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations, winning 11 of them, and also winning the Grammy award for Best Musical Theatre Album. Alexander Hamilton’s legacy was dying, and the success of the musical saved it. Around the time that Hamilton was being written and recorded, plans were being made to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill with Harriet Tubman, a decision that most Americans were in favor of. Not many people even knew who Hamilton was at the time. But, after the success of the play, public opinion switched over into Hamilton’s favor and those plans were discontinued, further preserving his legacy for many more years. Something extremely incredible about the play is that Alexander Hamilton went from being somebody that wasn’t even mentioned in history textbooks, to someone with an international fanbase. Another example of the creativity of Hamilton would be the varying music styles incorporated into the music. Hamilton combines many types of music, including, but not limited to, hip-hop, rhythm and blues, pop music, soul music, traditional-style show tunes. For that reason, many people were skeptical of the musical before it came out, not sure if it would turn out well. But, if the box office sales and raving reviews are anything to go by, Hamilton certainly accomplished
