Thomas Edison called it an invention that “annihilated time and space and brought the human family in closer touch.” President Rutherford B. Hayes deemed it “one of the greatest event since creation.” Telephones are a tool for communication. Telephones impacted America by providing a way to connect with others around the world.
Everyone and everything has a creator or should I say inventor. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone on March 10, 1876. Alexander was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He graduated from the University College in London. During his early life both of his brothers died of tuberculosis. Both his grandfather and father were expert on mechanics of voice and elocution. This helped lead him to discover a new method of capturing and transmitting sound, which became known as the telephone. According to the article “Telephone. Alexander Graham Bell”, Bell’s first prototype consisted of a thin sheet of metal held in front of an electromagnet. As a person speak it hits the metal it generates electricity in the electromagnet. These electric currents were transmitted through wire that are connected to the telephone. As they transmit in coils of an identical electromagnet in the other room, called a receiver. It vibrates against the receiver creating sound. The first telephone was made in 1876. Bell’s first telephone call concluded of a conversation between him and his assistant. “Mr. Watson, come here -- I need you”, said by Bell himself. The first telephone was so famous it was repeat in 1915 but this time Watson replied. Telling Bell it would take him a week because he was in San Francisco on the other line (Telephone. They developed for not only aesthetics but to be more efficient. Then there came wall mounted phones with long cords attached to the receiver and transmitter. Which set that image of a typical teenager twirling her finger in the cord, smacking her gum, and gossiping to her friend on the other line. Then came the handheld, which was a huge phone. Peopled carried them in suitcases with big batteries and components that made the phone work. Then came the smaller version with the antennas. Still not as efficient as our phones today. Then came the mobile house phone with the dock station. Now came handheld slide phones and flip phones. As cool as they seem people knew how hard it was to text on those phones. Which means the next phone was the model with a keypad on it. Still very obsolete to our phones today. Finally we are here with the Iphones and Androids that are all glass and touch screen. Instead of just being able to make phone calls now we can check Facebook, shop, surf the internet, take pictures, video chat, etc. Bell probably never though his invention would get this
