We live in the 21st Century, the age of scientific and technological advancements. One aspect of life that humans take for granted is communication. When the word, “Phone” is said, the phone companies like “Apple”, or “Samsung” automatically come to mind. Companies have attempted to innovate the phone for a great length of years, and that is why modern-day telephones and cellular devices are cosmetically sleek, futuristic, and more sufficient than ever before. Prior to receiving his patent, he was racing neck and neck with another inventor named Elisha Gray who was also applying for a patent for the telephone. Bell’s invention brought on immense success and wealth. Subsequently, he founded the Bell Telephone Company, a company that would develop a subsidiary known as the AT&T Corporation in the future. Alexander’s battles had not ceased yet, the patent for his invention led to controversial legal cases against him due to others beliefs that he was not the first true inventor. Although, there was legal difficulties, his telephone company continued to thrive. While the telephone business grew tremendously, at the Bell estate tragedies soon struck the family. Alexander’s sons Edward and Robert Bell passed away not too far apart due to birth complications and respiratory issues. Bell’s response to the heartbreak and trauma, was inventing a metal respiratory machine. This would later lead to the development of the iron lung, a device that was used as respirator in the 1950s for Polio. Many people believed in Alexander, and that included the 20th president of the United States James Garfield. President Garfield had been shot from an attempted assassination. He continued to remain patient, and never gave up on his inventions throughout his career. The 20th president of the United States trusting Alexander with his life, illustrated how reputable, well- respected and trustworthy he was. Bell invented one the most innovative and influential that changed the world forever. Alexander passed away on August 2, 1922. Telephone service was suspended in the United States and Canada as a moment of tribute to Alexander. This brief moment demonstrated the respect, and endearment these two nations had for the great Alexander Graham Bell. He was a pioneer and trailblazer of the 18th century. His invention led to the progression of city centers, businesses, and in future it would soon lead to the internet. Emergency services became more efficient and effective. Whether we are communicating with someone in the same city or an entirely different country, the telephone enables us to interact with one another while giving us instant gratification.
