Essentially, the word respect describes a situation where one person thinks highly of another. Authentic respect, however, requires a mutual and deep admiration between two people or groups. For example, respect between a supportive teacher and a proactive student often occurs. Respect also demands a high esteem gained through specific instances. A celebrity who acts as a role model to their fans often gains a high level of respect for the moral actions and decisions they make. Respect also necessitates a great regard in emotions of another. Alex Rodriguez received strong recognition for his baseball skills in the late 2000s. Many people believed he existed as the best player in baseball at this time. Then the baseball world got hit with breaking and disturbing news, he had used PEDs to enhance his play. His fans that once had had a high esteem for him could never view him as the same player. The entire sports world could not believe it. His popularity among fans plummeted due to this news. All his hard work and dedication he gained in the sport instantly disappeared as fans had lost that great regard they once had for him. Fans all across the country booed and harassed him after this discovery. One of the most popular athletes in baseball immediately became a hated icon of the sport. His career changed forever. His hard-earned reputation, trashed. Yankee fans who had a deep admiration for his abilities could never cheer for him the same. His Hall of Fame hopes had vanished with one bad decision. The athletic community considers PEDs a form of cheating, leading to ineligibility for the Hall of Fame. All his hard work had gone down the drain and his name, permanently diminished.
