Smart, sneaky, daring and adventurous are all traits that define a spy. In Anthony Horowitz’s novel, Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, Alex Rider, the protagonist, is a young teen whose uncle has just died. Ian Rider, Alex Rider’s uncle, was killed in a car crash, but something seemed off about his death. When Alex went to find clues to what happened, he was recruited by his Uncle’s employers, MI6, the United Kingdom’s secret service. Throughout the whole story, Alex Rider, a teen spy, works to avenge his uncle’s death and to save his country from destruction. Alex Rider learns a lot through his experiences and expresses many heroic traits from his adventure. Throughout the entire plot, Alex Rider, the young, bright protagonist, exemplifies many heroic traits that all, regardless of age, should strive to have as their attributes. In the beginning of the novel, Alex shows curiosity. Many people today would not be who they are without being curious; curiosity is a great heroic trait which sets many on their quests. In later parts of the story, Alex Rider also demonstrates bravery and wisdom. Bravery and wisdom are the two strongest heroic traits that everyone should strive to obtain. Imagine a world where no one was brave and took risks; the human society would not be where it is today. If no one ever used wisdom to support their actions, the state of the world would be catastrophic. Throughout Alex Rider’s Journey, Alex shows these heroic traits in many circumstances and he prompts us to equip ourselves with these traits through his actions with bravery, wisdom, and curiosity. Also stated in a review written of Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, states that “Horowitz balances Alex’s super-spy finesse with typical teen insecurities to create a likable hero living a fantasy come true” (Booklist Alex rider reviews), which helps tie to Linda Sue Park’s TED talk on children’s books changing the world. Alex Rider: Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz first came out in 2000 and has since to flourish with many more sequels, a movie, and a DS game. The series is still on the best selling list of series for children today. Anthony Horowitz has been an incredible author through the ages and has created a great read for all ages with Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, and he has gained many prestigious awards pertaining to the book with acknowledged reviews and being a New York Times best seller. Also throughout the story, Alex Rider has made a strong impact on the reader by exemplifying many heroic traits which encourage the reader to also exhibit them. Alex rider also has the ability helps change the perspective on who can make a difference, and it relates to Linda Sue Park’s Ted Talk on children’s stories changing the world. Alex Rider: Stormbreaker is a book that lives on. Through the ages it has continued to grow and further develop as a favorite read by many. This book has prompted many young readers to look through a different lense and to grow as the protagonist grows.
