Erin Lee Abbie Martin English 1022 10 March 2024 Trail of the Century January 25, 2023 was the official day the trial for Mr. Alex Murdaugh came to an end. Having been charged with two counts of first degree murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Those are the charges that the jury settled on as a verdict just over a year ago on March 2, 2023. It all started with a phone call to the South Carolina police department on June 7th of 2021. A phone call Alex Murdaugh made claiming that he had just returned home, and found his 22-year-old son, Paul, and his wife, Maggie, shot and unresponsive. The bodies were found by the dog kennels at the family’s hunting estate in Colleton County, South Carolina. The family’s hidden …show more content…
This was not the first time that the Murdaugh’s had been in trouble with the law, especially Alex. Mr. Murdaugh had originally been convicted of 27 years in prison for stealing millions of dollars from clients. In 1910 the law firm that supported the Murdaugh name was built from the ground up, by Randolph Murdaugh I. Alex Murdaugh was known for practicing personal injury law at the law firm. It had run through the family, and Alexander “Buster” Murdaugh Jr. was following in the footsteps of his father, and every other male figure in the Murdaugh name since 1910. Alex was convicted of stealing roughly $12 million dollars from clients. It is said that Mr. Murdaugh used a small portion of the money that he stole from his clients to help him pay for his opioid addiction. With how much money he stole, they put together the cost of opioids for a consistent user, which came to around 140 years worth of opioids.
