Alex Monologue

When Alex gained consciousness, the first thing she noticed was that someone was combing her hair. If she had to be honest, it didn’t feel too bad. Alex moved closer towards what she seemed to be sitting -or maybe leaning against, I don’t know- hearing a soft chuckle. Her still groggy mind came to the conclusion that she has imagined that. Secondly, she seemed to be on that somebody’s lap, and that they had their not-combing arm securely wrapped around her. Alex slowly opened her eyes taking in her immediate surroundings. It would seem that she was in a small in-ground pool, in what looked to be a cave. The cave was quite beautiful really, the walls were made of crystals that glimmered and sparkled in every shade of blue purple and green. …show more content…
Her skin was dark and sun-kissed and tinged a bluish green at the edges, with ears that lead her to believe she was a sea creature of sorts. The fins and gills also helped, along with the tail she was sitting on. In conclusion, she looked like a goddess, “Hello there little one, finally awake I see,” and she sounded like one too, her voice was smoky but smooth like honey all at the same time. She did not at all seem like a creature of unimaginable horrors, who demanded virgin sacrifices.
Alex mutely nodded, and the woman smiled, “H-hi,” Alex said weakly her face flushing. Oh gods, why am I so flustered, she thought frustrated with herself. Alex’s mind then took the time to realize that she was naked in the arms of a beautiful woman, who turned out to be an equally nude mermaid, save for the pearls and gems draped across her chest. Her face flushed even more if that was possible.
“Hi,” she said smiling at Alex while adjusting her in her arms to where she was sitting in her lap; she kept her arms around her too. Whether for support or to keep her from running, Alex didn’t know. “I am Luna, queen of the sea. And what am I to call you?” Luna

"We have to take the tunnel to get to our destination," she explained, taking the blanket off Alex and tossing it on the bed, before diving into the water, and swimming around to the stairs.
Alex let out a shriek as the water splashed her. She went over to the stairs where Luna was and made her way down the stairs, stopping when she was at Luna's height. "It is quite a long path to take you'll most likely drown before you reach halfway, "Luna said grabbing Alex's hands when she swallowed nervously, "Luckily I have a way to remedy that, but only if you are okay with it. I'd hate to force anything upon you." She smiled reassuringly.
"Uh ... okay," Alex said not sure what the 'remedy' was. As her mind ran through the possibilities of what she could mean, she didn't notice when Luna grabbed her face nor did she notice Luna start to lean in. Alex only snapped back into reality when Luna’s face was inches from hers. Alex gasped and Luna pressed her lips against her's, she felt the magic surging through her veins and she knew by now that she was getting a gift from Luna. This had to be by far the weirdest way she had received one

Public versus private self is something everyone experiences whether they are kept completely separate or they’re one in the same. Jodi Picoult uses this motif throughout Nineteen Minutes because it's such an essential part of everyone, it determines how people perceive one another and interact with them. An individual could be completely different from how the rest of the world views them which is shown through her characters and their situations. One of the characters josie is a great example of this very early on in the book when she explains her social life. “She understood how she was supposed to look and supposed to act… some mornings, it was hard to get out of bed and put on someone else’s smile; that she was standing on air, a fake who laughed at all the right jokes and whispered all the right gossip and attracted the right guy, a fake who had nearly forgotten what it felt like to be real.…
