Alex Lin was able to make a difference in the world because he wanted to protect the environment. Alex Lin found out about the problem when he read a Wall Street Journal article on e-waste. E-waste, witch is electronic waste, is very harmful to the environment because it has toxic chemicals in it. Alex Lin said, “ It first alerted me to the e-waste problem, and warned of an e-waste tsunami to come.” According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 12,000 compertures are thrown out daily, but out of that only eighteen percent is recycled or refurbished. He called the team Westerly Innovations Network, or WIN for short. The first thing the team did hold an e-waste drive. The team worked with Metech International, which is a recycling company, and together they collected 21,000 pounds of e-waste. Next, the team figured out reusing computers were more efficient than recycling computers. So, they fixed over three hundred computes and donated them to poor schools. Alex Lin said, “ To make this sustainable, we worked with the Westerly School System to incorporate computer rebuilding into the A+ Certified Computer Repair classes, curriculum.” These things are just some of the accomplishments the team did to make the environment a better
