Alex Da Cortes Free Roses Analysis

While examining Alex Da Corte’s exhibit, Free Roses, I felt comfort through immersion in both the complexities and simplicities of life presented by the artwork. As I walked into the first and main room of the exhibition, the first aspect of it that caught my eye was its layout. The arrangement engendered eight different zones that were positioned in a grid-like manner so that people could fully immerse themselves in the art and walk around each part. After examining, the different zones I sensed the connection; I felt as if I was a visitor in someone’s home. The lights hanging above each zone provided me with a deeper engagement because I felt as if I was under the same roof as the imaginary inhabitants of the exhibit. Creating a welcoming

JAY DEFEO: THE ROSE Jay DeFeo’s The Rose is remarkable. Its dimensions of 10.7’ x 7.7’ x 11” and its weight of 1,850 pounds are unbelievable. The time--eight years--spent on creating this work is extraordinary. In my opinion, this alone merits The Rose’s inclusion in this and all other art history classes.…

In the story, “A Rose for Emily,” William Faulkner debates with the reader on whether or not Mrs. Emily Grierson is, in fact, mentally unstable. To begin the story, Emily Grierson has died and the “…whole town went to her funeral: the men through sort of a respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house” (Faulkner, pg. 1 para. 1).…

Art is like a window to the mind, representing how one thinks or what one feels. In some cases, it may contain elements from one’s unconscious; elements that even they are not aware of themselves. Art has zero qualifications, allowing it to be crafted by anyone and everyone, while still containing components of its creator and provoking feelings in its spectators. (Rustin, 2008) Of the pieces involved in the Best of the Season exhibit at the Webber Gallery, Lunch With Einstein by David D’Alessandris is one of the more “unusual” pieces. It contains four figures, whose heads seem to be taken from elsewhere and pasted onto their bodies.…

Acknowledging the past of one can simply change the perception of who they are as a person. In the short story “The Glass Roses” written by Alden Nowlan, Stephen, a fifteen year old boy, is determined to become a man in the eyes of his father. A man to Stephen is someone who possesses characteristics similar to his father, such as being thick-skinned and hard-nosed. But Stephen is influenced by Leka’s past and eventually realizes there are more qualities that define a man. As the story progresses, Stephen deeply changes his perception on what masculinity traits are, due to the influences from the working men, his father and Leka’s past.…

In diverse manners, artists often successfully reflect, and display the impact and relationship humans have with the environment. This allows for society and the general population to further explore and understand their place within both the natural and unnatural world. Artists such as Jill Orr, Lin Onus and Andy Goldsworthy successfully reciprocate this by responding to the physical environment- and situations they are positioned in- through their creations of thought provoking art. These three particular artists use various forms of media- photography, painting and installation- in order to portray the central message. A full day in Grand Rapids, on 10 October 2015 with my 2 best friends, we loaded into my car to embark on a world wind day to experience all the luxuries Grand Rapids had to offer us. With the assignment rubric folded in my pocket and a pen, all of us had seen pieces of art that made us question, discuss, and analyze. Starting in Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum one artist was very blatant about not hiding his symbolism inspired by old world paintings, particularly the renaissance era. Randy Van Duinen used oil paints to depict a scene called “Redemption”, and at first glance you see a sorrowful angel beginning for mercy from the heavens but at closer inspection you see relief in the angel’s face as lighter colors around him show a beam of light or hope. I liked the shading the artist uses to give a sign of darkness but the beam of light around what looks like the repentant angel.…

Love once functioned simply as a business deal, with a man paying another man for his daughter’s hand in marriage. This payment would assure the father of his son-in-law’s status and admiration for his daughter and it inadvertently led to a sense of a man owning his wife. Thus was the culture of marriage for many centuries, however, this era of female enslavement stood no chance against the rapid urbanization of America. Women were now fleeing from the chains locked by their fathers and were heading to these new bustling cities, taking them by storm with their newfound freedom of expression and speech. These women were known as flappers; they dressed and spoke with sass and confidence, no longer shying away from the other gender’s illusion…

Inadvertently I stumbled upon something that I would take for granted as a refuge. A refuge in which I could express myself, my emotions and transfer them into a visual reality. For once I did not acknowledge the presence of the crutches beside me. Hesitant at first then gradually getting more bold with each sweep of the hand, my depressed state faded away as color expanded across the canvas and replaced itself with one of hunger and awe. This was the day art pulled me by the arm me and forced me to expand its importance in my life.…

In this paper, American artist Andrew Wyeth’s painting “Christina’s World” will be discussed and analyzed in an attempt to understand the meaning behind his artwork. Christina’s World features the back of a young woman laying in the fields, staring out at a building in the distance. The painting was initially displayed at the Macbeth Gallery, located in Manhattan after its completion in 1948, but had yet to receive attention from people around the world. The painting became more well-known after Alfred Barr, the director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) , purchased the painting and opened an exhibit for Christina’s World in MoMA. After being well publicized, the painting quickly became the topic for discussion where people were trying to figure…

The publication “The Museum as Context” by Amy Tucker analyzes the environment of the museum and how culture and context is changed depending on the environment art is presented in. The purpose of art exhibitions is to show the audience an organized presentation of particular art pieces. The question raised in this chapter is whether the organization of the presentation is precise to represent each piece of work and does this representation distort the meaning of a piece. There are many ways art exhibitions are presented and displayed, from light to temperature. Exhibits can be considered a piece of art themselves due to the specific arrangements and methods of displaying items to connect the viewers with each piece of work.…
