Alendronate is a bisphosphonate. Drugs in this class inhibit bone resorption by osteoclasts. Bisphosphonate are analogues of the naturally occurring substance, pyrophosphate, which is found in tissue fluid and helps regulate bone resorption They specifically act on osteoclasts (bone resorption cells) and promote their apoptosis (e.g. etidronate). Alendronate is more potent and stops the anchoring of the cell surface proteins of osteoclasts. Thus stopping attachment, and inhibiting bone removal (Rang et al., 2016). Alendronic acid is given orally for prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis as it prevents further fractures by limiting further weakening of the bones. It’s also a good treatment option as it is incorporated into bone re-modelling
