Bernard Marx is one of the more intelligent members of society in the Alpha caste. Unlike his fellow Alphas he is shorter which could have been caused by alcohol during the decanting process. Decanting is how modern people are grown in mass quantities on a conveyer belt eliminating the need for natural birth. His physical appearance causes him to be an outcast in the Alpha caste to the point where he has limited friendships with anyone. This causes him to be an angry and more introverted person and he often times questions things about his place in society. When he is talking to Lenina Crown about their society Bernard says, “Don’t you wish you could be free?” (Huxley 91). The world state tries to make it seem like each individual has rights and can live a happy life but Bernard knows they are not truly free. He questions this new societies perception of being happy and how that could be different to someone’s true happiness. Other people in the society would find this extremely unorthodox because they all believe they are truly happy with their lives. Bernard further denounces his society by saying, “I’d rather be myself,” he said. “Myself and nasty. Not somebody else, however jolly.” (Huxley 89). This is Bernard’s reaction to Lenina’s suggestion to taking soma. Soma is “the perfect drug” engineered by the World State so whenever you’re feeling down you can take it and feel better. …show more content…
Mustapha mond doesn’t appear in the story until later when he needs to reprimand the characters like Bernard Marx for causing problems in society. The World Controller says, “Its prohibited you see. But I make the laws here. So I can also break them.” (Huxley 219). Mustapha Mond demonstrates his unorthodoxy when he is forced to punish Bernard and his friends for their actions even though he himself owns illegal books for his own personal pleasure. Mustapha was once in Bernard’s shoes and was an unorthodox Alpha when he was recruited to become the next World Controller. A new World Controller isn’t needed so Marx will be sent to an island with more unorthodox people. Mond says, “You’ve got to choose between happiness and what people used to call fine art. We’ve sacrificed the fine art.” (Huxley 226). Fine art is no longer allowed in the World State but Mustapha possesses some for his own personal enjoyment when he himself is forced to banish people for searching for their own fine art. This solidifies Mond as an unorthodox individual due to his condescending nature as World Controller. Another person Mustapha has to punish, John The Savage, is not so lucky to receive this amnesty to world
