Alderfer's ERG Theory

Throughout the course of this term project, I had the opportunity to be a part of a team that made an impact on my growth professionally and personally since we each had to take turns being leaders. Being a part of Team 8 made the journey of unraveling the output problem at JV Commerce, that more fun. I am grateful that aside from working together as team members, we were able to become friends along the way. I have had nothing but positive experience working alongside Ruchi, David and Araceli. We managed to create a supportive environment where each member feels respected and listened to. I had the benefit of taking the role of leader twice in the semester with peer performance feedback. Overall, Ruchi, David and Araceli provided positive …show more content…
I believe that both Alderfer’s ERG theory as well as effective feedback are what truly shape me as a leader. In Alderfer’s ERG theory, (Existence, Relatedness, and Growth) I am aware that I exist as a leader and can focus on helping my teammates find ways to best utilize their skills and acknowledge their areas of development for future growth. In regards to relatedness, I see myself as one of them, this means that I see and understand the needs they might face and offering solutions such as, assistance with assigned tasks, help time managing class/work schedules and offer tutor sessions. Because of all this I am able to put myself in their shoes and truly understand if they attend meetings late or simply have a hard time with a deliverable. As a part of a team, growth is inevitable, we have all had the opportunity to grow independently but because of the friendship that has been established we have grown together. I also value effective feedback, a topic that was discussed as part of efficient communication between management (leaders) and others. As a leader I often sought and gave effective feedback in every possible aspect to assure that we were taking advantage of the time we have together. Being part of team 8 has opened up my eyes in seeing that open communication go hand in hand with effective feedback and it is effective feedback that paves …show more content…
Although I was able to accommodate everyone’s needs for our meeting location (change from in person to online), this may not be the case when working with a larger group or a more complex task. It is important for me to be aware that this change of location worked for me this time around because my teammates were very considerate of each other and we were only 4 members who are mostly commuters. This takeway will become an essential part of my life because regardless of my profession, pleasing everyone is not an attainable goal and this project made me realize this. Overall, I am thankful that Team 8 has had a great dynamic and that we were able to build such a strong bond to the point of becoming

Almost everyone in a position of leadership had someone they looked up to while finding out who they were as a leader. In my case, I have always looked up to my old football and wrestling coach. I interviewed him for this paper and asked him a couple questions about his leadership style and how he became a leader. I have always respected Coach Mac ever since I was a freshman on varsity. The thing he praises most as a leader is accountability, and just learning what went wrong or right in the situation, and learn from it.…

In middle school, I found myself to be more quiet, shy, and less outspoken than my peers. I joined all the same clubs and had the same interests as my peers, such as student council and National Junior Honors Society, but my introverted personality kept me from exploring new leadership roles. As I finished middle school and began my high school career, I brought my introverted personality with me. As first semester progressed, I joined clubs in school that encouraged an open mind and voice, specifically Key Club International, the world's largest, student-led, community service organization. In Key Club, I met students with open minds and strong leadership qualities.…
