Non-Scent Of Soap Essay

Improved Essays
The purpose of this experiment was to see if different fragrances affected a soap’s antibacterial properties. In this experiment, non-scented Alconox soap was used as the control. The experimental groups consisted of Joy lemon dishwashing soap, Dawn Escapes New Zealand Springs dishwashing soap, and the soap from the campus bathroom dispenser. The subject’s hands were washed with each of these soaps for approximately 30 seconds with each soap. The subject’s right hand was swabbed for each sample. It was hypothesized that the scent of the soap would affect the soap’s ability to kill bacteria during handwashing.
Based on how much bacterial growth occurred after using each soap, it was determined that the un-scented Alconox soap, which was the

First, the subject forgot to keep count of how long they were washing their hands, so it could have skewed the results, favoring one over another. It was estimated that their hands were being washed approximately 30 seconds per trial, but that may or may not be an accurate estimate. In the future, time should be recorded using a stopwatch or a similar device to get an accurate measure of how long the hands are being washed. It was more or less constant, but there was no guarantee that the hands were being washed for the same amount of time, so more control would be need to be exhibited in order to keep variables constant for each trial in the experiment. Secondly, what was touched by the subject in between handwashings could have also affected the results. Lastly, it probably would have been a good idea to swab the subject’s hands before using any of the soaps. That could have offered as a “baseline” for the experiment. How can one know that any of the soaps worked better than the other without getting a baseline swab? In the future, a pre-washing sample should be taken before beginning the experiment to help ensure the accuracy. Taking that idea one step further, pre-washing swabs could be taken before each experimental trial as

While placing the paper towel down onto the water, the amount of force I used varied for each trial. To combat this, a mechanism that applies equal force down onto the paper towel each time could have been used. In this unit of my 9th grade Physical Science, we are learning and experiencing with labs. In this week's experiment, my class did the paper towel lab. Here, we tested the quality of three different paper towel brands, Viva, Up&Up, and Bounty. Each lab group was testing for a certain quality of each brand, such as strength and absorbency. Through different experiments, each lab group came to the conclusion that one paper towel brand had more strength or better absorbency than the other two.…

Another source of error could have been that since the experimentation was over a two day timeframe, one group could have used two different bubble bottles to create their bubble populations. For example, the first soap bubble group tested was the one without help and this population of bubbles survived at least ten to twenty seconds after hitting the ground, but the next day, a different bottle was used and when doing experimentation for the bubble population with help, the bubbles had a tendency to pop immediately upon hitting the ground, which would have made it appear as though the populations without help did survived longer than the populations with help because two different bubble bottles were…

In the experiment, I tested how soapy water would affect the amount of droplets the penny can hold. The results of my experiment show that the penny holds less droplets of soap water. When the soap is added to the water, the soap collides with water breaking down the tension. As a result, it harder for the droplets to hold together. To find whether my hypothesis was right, I did several of trials to figure out whether my hypothesis was correct.…

I would choose to give up my sense of smell. This seems like the most sensible choice to me as it is far less traumatic than the sudden loss of eyesight or hearing. While all five senses are typically vital to survival, domesticated species and humans can typically survive losing a sense without any serious repercussions. We even have the ability to improve certain senses that are not up to par, such as eyesight. Anosmia – the medical term for loss of smell – is commonly associated with illnesses such as the common cold.…
