The concept of the inner conditions of a human undergoing destruction is reiterated here by Obaid while analyzing the characterization in “The Black Cat.” Careful analysis of the changes in the narrator or person in question reveals the shift towards insanity. Crimes and malicious actions punish people by ruining their demeanor. Poe emphasizes the theme of karma and poor intentions through his changing characterization which demonstrates the changes a…

In the short story, The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe, the Narrator would be known as a psychopath. A psychopath is a person that has a mental disorder like in the short story. Edgar Allen Poe is the type of author that writes a lot of gruesome stories about death and other nightmares. The Narrator is what I think of as, a psychopath. One psychopathic tendency from the short story is the only love the Narrator officially found was towards his pet animals.…

Taking into account the love that the wife of the narrator feels for the animals, and knowing this is a feeling they share, we can say that he thinks of her as one of his pets, because obviously he doesn’t trust and he doesn’t like humans as stated in the preceding quotation. In addition, his lack of understanding of their excessive love of animals foreshadowed his inability to explain his motives for his actions. Secondly, we can also infer that given the events in the story, when he was under the effects of alcohol, his level of aggressiveness grew, which stimulate him to attack Pluto (his cat). “The Black Cat”s narrator’s madness is instant and wild, unlike the narrator of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, who is meticulous and cautious about his planning. The narrator of “The Tell-Tale Heart” had planned the murder for a week before following through (“The Tell-Tale Heart” 81). The two narrators may both be crazy, but it is not in the same way. Even though the narrators are not exactly alike, they do have things in common with themselves and with other narrators in Edgar Allan Poe’s…

“TRUE! -- nervous -- very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?”(Poe 1) Conflict has been a part of our lives since our first breath, and will continue to be until our last. In the short story The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, we are exposed to three different and complex types of conflict; Man v. Man, Man v. Society, Man v. Himself. Poe uses these conflicts coupled with ambiguity to arouse an intricate type of fear in the reader, while shining a light on real world issues. In an effort to prove his sanity, the narrator tells his story of murder, “Hearken! And observe how healthily -- how calmly I can tell you the whole story.…

Furthermore, these illusions contribute to the mental breakdown of both narrators. The imaginary heartbeat leads the narrator of “The Tell-Tale Heart” to become so overwhelmed by guilt that he confesses his crime to the police even after convincing them of his innocence (Poe 691). Similarly, the spot that looks like a gallows causes the narrator of “The Black Cat” to become afraid of the cat that bears the spot and causes his hatred for the cat to increase as it follows him around his home day after day (Poe 699). This ultimately leads him to swing at the cat with an axe and to kill his wife with the axe after she attempts to keep him from hurting the cat (Poe 699). According to writer Veronica Mueller, “Throughout Mr. Poe’s works, his characters are usually dominated by their emotions.…
