Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting Experience Paper

Last Saturday night, I went to an open Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Joyful Servant Lutheran Church which is called the KISS fellowship. Each member of the fellowship has the chance to run the meeting, and most of them are alcoholics. It is basically a welcome of newcomers and sharing of personal experience and ideas. The meeting has about 33 people, including visitors and sponsors. Ages vary from young adult to old people, but most are at middle age. Most of them are male. The fellowship sets up homegroup to support members, as well as other events.
The meeting held in the living room. There were several round tables in the middle, and two square tables in the front. The ones in charge sat at the square tables while the rest sat around the round tables and several rows behind. The meeting was somewhat casual that people dress shirts and jeans, and they sometimes whispered to each other while someone was talking. The meeting began with a together prayer, and then newcomers shouted out their names. But I think this is a powerful technique that it makes you aware of your situation, as well as a strong reminder that you should change now. The requirement for the fellowship member is easily understandable and genuine: the only request is your desire to stop drinking alcohol. It is not simple for people to stop drinking. However, although people may fail, every time they recall this request, they aware that why they want to join the fellowship and do all the work.
