Introduction and Significance
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is defined as chronic relapsing brain disease characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences. AUD can range from mild to severe and recovery is possible regardless of severity. According to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5), AUD consists of two distinct disorders: Alcohol Dependence and Alcohol Abuse, each classified separately in DSM IV. This proposed study would emphasize the presence of disfluencies in speech of an individual with AUD during the detox and rehab phases of recovery.. The type and frequency of speech disfluencies presented by this population will be described to further understand motor behavior during AUD recovery. The information obtained during this research will guide the evaluation and intervention approaches used with this population by providing information regarding: a) expected speech behaviors, b) type and frequency of observed disfluencies, c) severity of observed disfluencies, d) Observed change in speech fluency if medication is administered as part of recover, e) observed change in fluency during withdrawal, in speech as a withdrawal symptom, and f) development of secondary speech behaviors during …show more content…
The subject will then be interviewed by a professional through in-person meeting or video-calling (using WebEx which has end-to-end encryption) to obtain demographic details, speech-related information, detailed medical history and information regarding AUD. Demographic information includes: name, date of birth, gender and other related questions. Speech related information involves: history of speech or language disorder, history or presence of Stuttering, family history of speech or fluency disorder, current speech and language status, history or presence of cognitive difficulty, any secondary behaviors associated with speech disorder and other relevant information if indicative. Medical history includes details of: presence of significant neurological disorder like stroke or seizures, presence of psychological disorder like Anxiety or Depression, history of trauma, any medications for other ailments like DM, HTN, any other relevant questions. Questions related to AUD will involve: age since started consumption of alcohol, age when got diagnosed with AUD, treatment span, time since on Medication for AUD, name of the medicine, co-existing withdrawal symptoms and other related
