Condition in which exposure to alcohol in utero causes a series of irreversible symptoms. The symptoms vary from child to child but it can cause brain damage and growth problems. No amount of alcohol consumptions is safe at any time of the pregnancy. Early diagnosis will not reduce FAS’ effects but it may reduce the risk of learning difficulties and behavior issues.
Cause. Consuming alcohol during pregnancy. The fetus metabolizes alcohol slower than an adult so it stays in their system longer interfering with the delivery of oxygen and nutrition to the fetus at this critical time of development. The fetus needs specific types and levels of nutrients in order to develop properly.
