What is the major research question that is being addressed in this research study?
Is room type (suite vs. standard) related to drinking frequency (general and residence halls), number of drinks consumed when socializing and heavy episodic drinking?
5. In your own words, describe how the authors set out to find the answers to their research question. In other words, how did they conduct their study?
They conducted their study by using two surveys the alcohol norms surveys and the resident assessment survey, it controlled for attitudes, gender, high school drinking and perceptions of peer drinking. The alcohol norms survey measuring alcohol consumption, perceptions and attitudes, they used a random sample of 1270 students from three pre selected residence halls (2 suites, 1 standard) and out of the sample only 35% participated. What did the data from the study show about how college dorm living situations influence drinking behavior?
The data showed that their was a relation between room type and number of drinks being consumed. That the residence hall environment influenced the consumption of alcohol becauses of its community atmosphere. That suite halls drank more often; including heavy episodic drinking and consuming more while socializing. And that all female floors drank less and less often than females on coed floors. This showed that girls might be peer influenced when hanging around the male friends, indicating that coed floors are negatively affecting female drinking behaviors due to being around males/male drinkers.
8. What did the authors think were the limitations of this study?
Limitations of this study were that it was only conducted on one U.S campus and that this study was limited because of its design, it was a one facet of design, it didn’t include other types of residence design set ups. In addition, for future finding, they thought of new ways to research by asking other questions like why the student choose their particular residence
