The workplace and the workforce are two different concepts that contribute to drug and alcohol use. When one uses the term "workplace," they are describing the conditions of employment, such as the demands of the job (physical, mental, emotional) and the presence of management and coworkers (whether support is provided or stress is further increased). The "workforce" is used to identify other characteristics that factor into drug use, specifically those of the individual who is employed, (e.g. race, education level, and marital status) (p. 289).
