The Webster definition of danger is the possibility that you will be hurt or killed. We let danger flow through our blood and often don’t think twice about the consequences. Drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and inebriated violence are real and happening across the United States. Alcohol is a dangerous drug that is used on a daily basis by American citizens. The law concerning when it’s legal for people to drink has been stirring up major controversy for decades.…
In my opinion, the 21st amendment is the most significant minus the Bill of Rights. Many of you may disagree, however, prohibition caused an uproar of crime and an economic meltdown. The overall thought behind the 18th amendment some would say to be beneficial. The result, however, was detrimental enough to be the first amendment ever repealed.(history.com staff 2010) Many religious cultures and other advocates promoting a “dry” America believed that making alcohol illegal would make us a better country.…
One more drink won’t hurt. One more drink, just one more. Climbing higher and higher, cup by cup. Failing to notice the spinning room, that I am reaching my limit. The haziness increasing as I reach for another red cup, instead knocking it over.…
In 1984, President Reagan signed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in order to help with the drunk driving epidemic that groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving had argued was the fault of drivers between the ages of 18 and 21. This law was one of the 39 suggestions made to the President by the Presidential Commission Against Drunk Driving, amoung the suggestions were youth education courses about drinking responsibly, harsher punishments for driving under the influence of alcohol that mimic those of foreign countries, and public information campaign. (cite) The United States became one of the few countries in the world to have a drinking age over 18. In the mid 1970s, 60% of traffic fatalities involved alcohol (cite).…
“Approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die each year because of alcohol related accidents; of those 5,000 kids 1,700 of them are university students. 1,600 of those killed yearly are from alcohol related murders, and 300 suicides.”(NHSA). In the United States, the number of drunk driving deaths has been lowered in half, since the age limit to drink alcohol turned 21. 54 percent of teenagers in high school that drink and drive have drooped by more than half since 1991. Yet, high school teens drive after drinking about 2.4 million times a…
Most cultures around the world have a designated age their youth must reach to be considered a legal adult. The age when a teen is seen as an adult is often dependant upon a culture’s beliefs. In America, it is believed that at age eighteen, one becomes a legal adult. As a legal adult in American society one earns the right to go into combat, take part in elections, purchase cigarettes, get a tattoo or piercing without parental consent, and fill out legal documentation without a parent’s signature. In other words, those who are eighteen in America are allowed to risk their life by fighting in a war, choose who they think should lead the country, potentially damage their body by purchasing and using tobacco products, risk infection with a tattoo…
In a country infused with varied socio-cultural traditions revolving around alcohol consumption and promotions within popular media portraying its potential for pleasure and enjoyment, the presence and influence of alcohol becomes inescapable. Such prevalence of alcohol within American society raises a question concerning the appropriate minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) for an increasingly dynamic culture. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 punished states that allowed persons below age 21 to purchase and consume alcohol by withdrawing highway funding. Consequently by 1987, all 50 states had adopted an MLDA of 21. However despite current nationwide restriction, drinking remains commonplace among a high percentage of youth.…
Alcohol awareness programs in schools across America are ineffective in delaying the deaths of 1,800 students every year due to alcohol-related causes. An additional 600,000 are injured while drunk(Hingson). The government needs to approve a bill for a budget that will not only provide free education ,under any circumstances, but improve the quality of the information that alcohol awareness programs are passing on to all students. Through these procedures the movement of drinking alcohol isolated from the outside world will shift, specifically from college dorms, to bars and other public places with better security. An estimated 6.6 million children under 18 live in households with at least one alcoholic parent(FAS).Education on proper alcohol management should not be limited to just students but also their guardians , the first teachers of any child.…
More than fifty-nine billion dollars are spent each year because of alcohol-related crashes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Above obesity, inactivity and even tobacco, alcohol is the number one top health risk factor for middle-income people, who establish half of the world’s population (Wanjek,…
In 2016, 223.2 billion US dollars were spent on alcoholic beverages, and about a quarter of accidents happened because of alcohol intake. Multiple people have died, gotten hurt, hurt others, and caused damage because of drinking. This can all be stopped by one simple change, no sales of alcohol after…
“Drunk driving is a significant problem in the United States, costing thousands of lives and billions of dollars each year”(Preventing). Drunk driving is not just a huge problem in the United States, the whole world suffers from it. Some people do not see the real cost of drunk driving. When the driver is drunk, families experience losing a loved one, whether the deceased was part of the problem or not. The driver that consumes a significant amount of alcohol cannot control him or herself, weaving in between lanes, running down innocent people on sidewalks, or simply getting into a car accident.…

Abbie Hill Kendra Gallos English III 3/27/18 What is the best way to prevent deaths from drinking and driving? Did you know that drunk driving takes the lives of about 10,000 kids or adults per year? That’s almost 29 people a day.(Drunk Driving 1) It is also surprising to find out most of the people getting into accidents while intoxicated are kids under the age of 21 and not people that are over the age of 21.…
No one in this world wants to lose a family member to a drunk driver. Drinking and driving should not happen in the United States. Bars should take more actions, people need to plan ahead of time before going out and learn to limit themselves on how many drinks and money spent or the people should start a program for people just turning twenty one on drinking and driving and the consequences. Most people do not realize the great risk of drunk driving to ones life or others. Take more time to look at driving under the influence and making the streets safer.…
