Introduction
One of the main challenges currently faced by Alcoa Intalco Corporation, or any aluminum plant, is the disposal of spent liners otherwise known as SPL. On September1988, SPL was listed by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as hazardous waste (53 Fed. Reg. 35412) coded as K088, and with that came stricter regulation and much rather extensive fines and matters of safety issues, not to mention, different protocols for safe handling and storage of SPL. Landfilling was considered the safest way to dispose spent liners in the past and Alcoa Intalco had 3 landfills past to which they are still financially responsible for. This challenge can take a financial toll on the company if not properly handled. Last year, the company

Alcoa Intalco currently operates two and a half potlines. On a global prospect, aluminum refineries produce at least 500,000 tons of waste products a year, given safety issues to transportation and sites storage not to mention responsibility of this waste products, have become extremely expensive. According to the EPA archive, “the largest K088 generator is located in Washington (Intalco Aluminum) which reported generating 8,681 tons (10% of total generation) in 1997,” (EPA archive, p. 15). This project is created in the hope that will not only eliminate environmental and economic issues, eradicate future potential liabilities as well and increase profit. The new treatment system is fairly new resulted from years and millions of dollars in researches initiated by different aluminum companies such as Portland Aluminium, Ausmelt, CSIRO and Alcoa. Likewise, it will be our responsibility to ensure early detection in this process. Retrieving of spent potliners from the Intalco smelter facility may slow the treatment process, not knowing how often that will happen so establishing a schedule is relevant. Also, equipments can be faulty at time so frequent checks and proper inspections of equipments should be conducted at least once a month to ensure that this will not delay the process. Another bottleneck that is often overlooked is ensuring that there are enough workers in the facility in events of employees calling in sick, emergencies and such. Bad management can be an issue if not corrected.

Lean Management Process

Recognizing customers’ values is important to Alcoa Intalco and we will continue so in this fashion. Synthetic sands are one of the bi-products produced for commercial use as mentioned before and since this maybe relatively new to the community, introducing further use of this product in road-makings and concrete works will take careful consideration. Replacing real sands with synthetic is a great concept for business because it will help with environmental issue which is the core value of this business.

    Alum Is Aluminum Sulfate?

    • 190 Words
    • 1 Pages

Alum is aluminum sulfate. Aluminum reacts with sulfuric acid to produce alum. While the reaction is faster with smaller pieces of aluminum (more surface area to react act), the yield will not be affected as long as there is sufficient sulfuric acid to complete the reaction (even then, the shape and size of the aluminum would not have an appreciable effect). If you reallllllly want to get into the most picky detail, the aluminum oxide surface layer may not react with the acid, thus favoring the larger piece, which has less oxide on it.…
