Meursault’s mother dies, and he attends her funeral. Shortly after, a new romance buds between himself and a lady named Marie. Mr. Meursault then becomes friends with his neighbor Raymond. Together, they plot a way to get back at Raymond’s girlfriend for doing him wrong. As a result of this, the girlfriend’s brother gets into a scuffle with Raymond at the beach. Raymond almost kills him, but Mr. Meursault kills him instead as a “result of the sun’s heat”. This gets him put in jail and sentenced to death by guillotine. I love the title of this book because you don’t really understand it until the end and because it could have so many different meanings. For starters, the title leads you to believe that there is only one stranger and while reading, you most likely assume that person is the one Mr. Meursault murdered since he didn’t know the guy at all. As you continue to read though, it is clear that the real stranger is Mr. Meursault himself. As everyone is testifying in his favor, they all begin to realize that they don’t really know Meursault as well as they thought. I think Mr. Meursault feels like everyone else is a stranger too. He doesn’t really understand their emotions after all, and how do you understand someone without being able to feel empathy or emotion? You
