Alaskan Airlines Arena-Personal Narrative

Improved Essays
The captivating sounds of drums, and passionate voices singing, as I walked into the Alaskan Airlines Arena, will forever be embedded into my memory. My words will never give this music its rightful justice. Therefore, I highly recommend that everyone, at least once, attend a Powwow, and experience this incredible music for themselves.
Although this was a class assignment, my wife and children came along with me. I thought it was a good way for us to enhance our cultural awareness, and experience a culture different from our own. I was not disappointed. Immediately, I felt a sense of pride and honor as I walked in, and talked to individuals inside the arena. Many of these people had booths set up and were selling handmade merchandise, which

The event I attended was the Cuentos y Culturas Latinx Heritage Month Showcase hosted by Say Sí. The event ran from September 23rd to the 24th. The performance was only available on the opening days, however the exhibit portion was open to the public for a few weeks after. The performance was an original stage production that portrays one of the creation stories from the Coahuiltecans, who were Native Americans that lived in the southern regions of texas. The name of the production is Napako, meaning “our journey”.…

On Sunday, June 21st, I went to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform “The Music of John Williams and Hollywood’s Great Composers” at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The concert was held in the church’s worship room at 6:30pm. This was a great place for the DSO to perform because the audience and the orchestra were very close and, in a way, felt more personal. The show included fourteen pieces: “Overture to Captain Blood by Korngold, ‘Tara’ – A Short Poem for Orchestra from Gone with the Wind by Steiner, arr.…

In 1968, the Marching Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina (UNC) released a 7-inch 33 ½ rpm record consisting of eight school songs including “Here Comes Carolina,” “Carolina Fight Song,” and UNC’s alma mater “Hark the Sound.” Past UNC students wrote and composed over half of the fight songs featured on the album, and the student marching band performs the same songs today, nearly five decades later. In fact, the band and fans conclude each game with “Hark the Sound,” linking arms and singing the lyrics a UNC student wrote over 100 years ago in 1897. As the “Go Tar Heels!” exhibit exemplifies with this piece, a game is about more than the athletes.…

The aggie band began its roots with Joseph Holick, a campus cobbler, who arranged the Aggie Band in 1894, and after 4 directors and years of work on marching and precision maneuvers the Aggie Band has become an irreplaceable and important aspect of the Texas A&M culture (1). Therefore, it was essential for the band’s informal performance at Rudder Fountain to showcase this important aspect of Aggie culture, and remind everyone they are in the presence of the “Nationally Famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.” The culture of Texas A&M is very different compared to other universities, it is rooted in agricultural and military beginnings, and these military beginning play a huge role in shaping the band’s performance and attire. The Corps of Cadets are regarded as “Keepers of the Spirit” and maintain that record with ensuring traditions and the culture is upheld and taught. Furthermore, the last song played by the aggie band on February 11 was the Aggie War Hymn; however, the most fascinating portion of the performance of the Aggie War Hymn, was that the band members immediately quit playing and joined in arms and legs and sang the hymn.…

I’ve been playing the incredible sport of Ice Hockey for over 10 years now. Although it has become steadily easier, and more about sharpening skills than developing them, in the beginning it was extremely difficult. The progress I have made since when I first began playing is immeasurable. I have come as far as I have in hockey through all the years of support from my father, because he’s always been happy to watch me play competitively.…

What I really enjoyed was the atmosphere. The lights were dimmed so people could feel more comfortable and the music consisted of a good balance of upbeat music, and slow music. Songs were sung and people worshiped for about forty-five minutes. This was a very moving experience. Glancing into the audience, it was evident that everyone was engaged in the worship.…

My mother, brother and I arrive in the Atlantic City airport after a surprisingly short two hour flight. After dawdling away time by alternating between electronic games and magazine scavenger hunts, or sleeping (in my mother’s case), we were ready to see our timeshare hotel suite. Our destination a half hour away, we climbed into a traditional cab. Our driver provided unintended humor with his strong Jamaican accent. Mom made small talk, inquiring about the city: where to eat, what to do, etc.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

It was Christmas night and I had still not packed a single item of clothing into my suitcase. Instead, I was too excited about all of my new gifts I received and anxious about my KSA Holiday Basketball Tournament in Orlando, Florida. Finally, I returned home from all of my Christmas festivities and began to unpack all of my fresh clothing and repack all of the items into my suitcase. My house was like the mall on Black Friday, my parents and I were running around frantically trying to remember what was packed and what was not packed. After we were certain we had everything we needed for the week in Florida, we tried to get some sleep before we embarked on the ten hour van ride we had ahead of us.…
