Intro: The theme of self discovery is extremely present throughout the whole book. By the end of the book, almost every character has figured something out about themselves because of the experiences they have been through.
Point: Miles had a joy for remembering people's last words before they died, Francois last words were the ones that made him begin his journey to self discovery and the Great Perhaps. Miles says
Proof: "Francois Rabelais. He was this poet. And his last words were 'I go to seek a Great Perhaps.' That's why I'm going. So I don't have to wait until I die to start seeking a Great Perhaps” (Green 27).

Comment: Here Miles is defining the difference between Alaska and himself. Intense and unpredictable, Alaska is the hurricane to Miles’ drizzle-like personality. In part, Miles fascination with Alaska is that she is so different from him. In his eyes, her volatility takes him away from his ordinary life and brings him closer to the Great Perhaps. In many ways, Pudge’s fascination with Alaska is founded upon the idea that she is different and therefore better than him, but at the same time, his idolization of her prevents Miles from seeing their similarities and truly enjoying the time he spends with Alaska.
