The first thing one may expect to find in Alaska Young's trash can would be a pack of cigarrettes or perhaps, a few packs. Alaska smoked quite often, while Miles and Chip smoked to have a fun time, Alaska seemed to smoke for a darker reason. She states, “Ya'all smoke to enjoy it. I smoke to die.” (pg. 44) Smoking cigarretes is apart of Alaska's rebellious character and also something associated with being used as a way to ease the guilt she carried for not calling the ambulance to save her mothers life during her anuersym.
2. Alcohol

She may not be able to send them to her mother, but writing her feelings out may be a way to cope with the loss.
5. Depression medication
Alaska has never positively dealt with the loss of her mother, who passed when Alaska was just eight years old. Alaska blames herself because she was unaware of what to do when her mother began to scream, instead of calling an ambuance, she sat with her until she 'fell asleep.' After all the years that have passed, Alaska has never forgiven herself, she tells Miles, " Pudge, what you must understand about me is that I am a deeply uhappy person." (pg. 124) Due to Alaska's substance abuse and reckless behavior, it seems she struggled with depression and could have been taking medication to somewhat help feel better.
6. An unread book collection
Alaska had a large collection of books she purchased from multiple garage sales every summer since she was a little girl. Although she has not yet read all of them, or even a third of them, she planned to read every single book one day. Alaska calls her collection her "Life's Library." If it appeared interesting, she wanted to read it
