Alaska’s Earthquake

The largest earthquake that has happened in the United States happened 50 years ago in 1964 on March 27 in Alaska. This earthquake is the most powerful earthquake that has struck the U.S. It traveled 78 miles east of Anchorage, Alaska and lasted four minutes and thirty-seconds. The earthquake caused devastation to the landscape including, tsunamis, ground fissures, avalanches, and underwater landslides.
There were 139 deaths but only 15 from the actual earthquake itself. Most of the people died from the two tsunamis that happened in Oregon and California. There were 5 deaths in Oregon from the tsunami and 13 in California. And eleven of the impacts of the earthquake were recorded with a magnitude of 6.2 and greater.
