Having critical analysed Alasdair MacIntyre’s thought provoking and in depth article entitled “Is Patriotism a Virtue?” it can be noted there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration in order to view patriotism as a virtue or the mutually opposed belief that patriotism is a vice. This comparative review of patriotism is based on moral foundations which influences one perspectives about the nature of patriotism. In this essay I hope to give a clear account of MacIntyre’s views in relation to this topic by providing an explanation of patriotism, what it entails , the impact of morality and the various viewpoints that can be taken which no doubt influences ones views about the nature of patriotism . However, it must be stated …show more content…
It is his belief in this article that patriotism is associated with morality but before we can analyse this relationship we must define it .As noted by MacIntyre patriotism can be defined as “loyalty to a particular nation which only those possessing that particular nationality can exhibit”. In addition to this, his article puts forward the idea that patriotism involves particularities in terms of one’s nation, nationality and where their loyalties lie. While it involves loyalty to a particular nation it is fundamental that consideration is given to the characteristics, achievements and merits of one’s community. His communitarian view of patriotism involves going beyond ones admiration for their country and their ability to criticise it but most importantly viewing it as a core element of individuals lives which helps them in being the best they can be. From analysing this article I am of the opinion that it is his belief that if patriotism is to be considered a virtue it should be viewed as a loyalty exhibiting virtue. Similarly patriotism involves more than love and loyalty for one’s nation, it involves an action generating process. Simply, loyalty which an individual has for their country is expressed not only in words but through their actions. Additionally as a catholic communitarian thinker MacIntyre is of the opinion that virtues should be given priority. Furthermore, he believes that …show more content…
Individual’s morality can be derived from those in power in their society, as they have more control over what should be viewed as a virtue or a vice. If powerful individuals think it is morally acceptable to view patriotism as a virtue then those members of society influenced by those in power will too be of that opinion. Similarly, if a member of society submits themselves to those that excel they will become a good citizen. According to MacIntyre, an individual is less likely to remain a moral agent if they are deprived of their community “they are unlikely to flourish as moral agents “.This no doubt highlights the notion that community plays a significant role in providing morality. Therefore, morality of patriotism is based on membership of a particular community, however criticism must be allowed to enable individual’s to stand back and abstract oneself from the roles and views they inhabit in order to choose morally and freely which view of patriotism they wish to

Patriotism, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, is “love that people feel for their country.” In different ways, American’s express patriotism. Ian Frazier’s “All-Consuming Patriotism” provides insight as to that same love people feel for their country being abused by our government. In this text, Frazier presents a strong opinion demonstrating the power of the government and the toll the government has on it’s people. Although I, personally, do not recall the attack on 9/11, that act of terrorism affected our country in ways I cannot comprehend.…

The example has been provided to show that the natural instinct for human to make a spectacle of goodness has a possibility to make them as hypocrites. Stephen Kiernan once told “Authentic patriotism is not about you, what you believe or what you think it's right... Authentic patriotism is not an opinion, It’s an action.” I can honestly say both are important because thinking are thoughts and actions are acts but actions are what's more important. A person may think something but not act on it for whatever fear they have.…

The quote ”A good nationalism has to depend on a principle of the common people, on the myths of a struggling commonality”express the fact that a nation is built on the coming together of common citizens as well as establishing a feeling of struggling. This feeling creates an environment where our society feels it must work hard to keep the nation together. Andrew O’Hagen has taken the reality of different nations in our world and has put them into one sentence. Andrew O'Hagen's view is one of that may be controversial due to the fact that it completely embraces the ideological factor of nationalism where a nation is defined under specific rules and not defined by the diversity of the citizens. A nation under his perspective may be considered more of an ethnic nation which is a nation where there is one common culture, race and religion compared to a civic nation where there a combination of cultures, races and religions.…

The Feud of the Patriot and the People: A Comparison and Discussion of Zinn’s and Schweikart - Allen’s Histories of the United States When traditionally defined, the terms “patriot” and “people” have oftentimes been considered complementary constructs. The term “patriot” is defined as an emotional, positive attachment to a homeland. It alludes to memories of nationalistic revolution, of the Revolutionary War and Glorious Revolution, where the oppressed and exploited “people” rise up in mutiny and restore justice and integrity. In contemporary history, however, the concepts of the people and patriotism are often contradictory; the masses are often have a very strifeful relationship with the nation. This dissociation is eloquently exemplified…

It is a generally accepted fact that the people love the soil they are born on. However, in oppressed dictatorships and tyranny rules , the people who once had faith in their homeland may become emotionally depressed and start cursing their fate of being born in that particular country. Thus, these forms of governments can greatly have an adverse effect on one’s devotion to his birthplace which gives way to little or no patriotism. On the other hand, in a democratic form of government, everyone has their say in the leadership and they have access to human rights. Thus, this equity in the society together with the love of homeland creates such patriotism that is not apparent in any other forms of government.…
