Alan Moore's Watchmen

Decent Essays
My favorite book I have read since the last portfolio conference was called Watchmen by Alan Moore. It was also Extremely influential as it was the first novel or indeed graphic novel handling things like sexuality, rape, rioting, police brutality, and mental illness with such a firm basis in reality. It also really immerses you into these problems with extremely compelling and real characters which draws you into the story. Also because it is a graphic format there are so many fun little details to look at they almost distract you from the depressingly truthful commentary on the human condition.

This year, I’ve read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Most Dangerous Game, Station Eleven, Harrison Bergeron, and 1984. All of these stories show many of my beliefs, but 1984 best shows them. 1984 best shows my beliefs because of its warnings about surveillance and power-hungriness. George Orwell wrote 1984 to warn the world about dangers he foresaw. One warning expressed through 1984 is the use of devices called “telescreens” to keep track of everyone’s actions.…

"A work of literature must provide more than factual accuracy or vivid physical reality... it must tell us more than we already know. " - E. M. Forster. This means that the story must provide a little more then just facts and vivid physical reality. It must give more knowledge of what is already known and what is and must be achieved. I agree with the critical lens is valid because without the method of writing readers would be lost when they read about articles.…

The Cather in the Rye really sucked me in and got me thinking about a lot. The book is about teenager Holden Caulfield and his experiences growing up and maturing in New York before he decides to go home. Initially the book started out kind of slow but quickly picked up and I had a hard time putting it down. The Catcher in the Rye quickly caught my attention and dragged me in. In the second chapter of the book while Holden is talking to his history teacher Mr. Spencer about how life is just a game, Holden states “Game, my ass.…

Although debatable and somewhat absurd at times, men are indeed responsible for the well being of their fellow man. As argued by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, men are often responsible for the well being of their neighbors as their actions often have profound impacts on such people despite their innocent beginnings and personal intentions. This ideal is manifested in the noir portrayal of superheroes in Alan Moore’s Watchmen where the hero Dr.Manhattan defies the idealistic standards of heroes and instead seeks to complete his quest without acknowledging the alternative catastrophic results of doing so. In addition, another example can be seen in the terrorist attacks by the self-proclaimed “Islamic State” in the late quarter of 2015 which…

The most interesting non fiction book i’ve ever read was The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The 1st person POV throughout the book made it seem like I was Malcolm X himself, going through all of the hardships of his childhood, the insane situations of his pothead and drug dealer phase, and finally experiencing the finding of his true self and becoming the strong persuasive figure he was. Malcolm X’s life today, is still the epitome of a rags to riches story. From observing his mother being put into a psych ward and his father dying, to being put into jail for theft, Malcolm’s story consists of unimaginable trials and tribulations. In the end Malcolm X’s persistence, faith, love, and intelligence helped him change the world.…

My favorite piece that we read so far was “CONFESSIONS OF A RECOVERING MISOGYNIST” by Kevin Powell. This is by far my favorite because it is a narrative and not just talking about laws or anything but an actual true story that happen. This piece is especially powerful in that he is stating his own flaws which means he actually took the time to step back and realize he does have serious flaws like everyone else in the world. Another obvious important aspect in this piece is that it is written and told by a man as opposed from almost everything else we read that is told from the victim's point of view whom is also a woman as well. Kevin Powell is even so bold to start out the piece with “I AM A SEXIST MALE” which doesn’t leave us questioning…

The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…

I chose the book The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature by Matt Ridley because I have always been fascinated by how our culture views sex and how it has had an effect on our evolution. The author discusses how the biological factors of sexual selection has affected human psychology. You probably remember the Red Queen hypothesis from recently. From Through the Looking Glass, Alice meets the Red Queen who is constantly running just to stay in one place and not fall behind.…

Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, illustrates the consequences of one attaining power in order to save the world from danger. There are three characters who have different philosophies in which they believe can save the world from destroying themselves. Ozymandias believed that to save the world from danger, there should be a mass murder of people on earth, in order to save billions. Rorschach believed that, “There is good, and there is evil, and evil must be punished.” Dr. Manhattan philosophy is to let time happen because time is irrelevant.…

Boy overboard from the very beginning had me really interested because of the story and the way it was written. I chose to read the book Story of a Girl this unit. This book had many themes such as, love, family, home, and respect and reputation. While I believe all the themes in the book were important and played a big role in bringing the story together, the theme respect and reputation stood out to me. One incident pretty much ruins Deanna's reputation at school and at home.…

The novel “The other Wes Moore,” written by Wes Moore, is a story involving two men with the same name, who grow up to live two totally opposite lives. Both boys grew up fatherless, in poverty, and living in bad neighborhoods. For the most part, their upbringings were extremely similar with minor differences, but at a point in their lives they went on to live on opposite sides of the spectrum. Wes, the author, grew up most of his life without a father because he died, but he lived with his mother and older sister. After his father’s passing, Wes’ mother, Joy, decided to move their family to the Bronx with his grandparents.…

The books and articles I read this summer taught me to take common topics and change the way I look at them. They covered a wide variety of subjects such as adult life, capital punishment, school shootings, and how my own mind works. They all received critical acclaim and it is obvious why. All the authors cause their readers to question the way they have been looking and going about things. David Foster Wallace’s commencement speech to Kenyon College graduates has received praise because of his ability to break the set pattern of commencement speeches.…
