Alabama Political Cartoon Summary

Improved Essays
Cartoon Analysis This cartoon depicts the Alabama Senate election. Roy Moore was a candidate in this election, and he is displayed as an evil person surrounded by fire and lightning. This is referencing the sexual misconduct allegations against Moore and his ultra-conservative beliefs (e.g. homosexual conduct should be illegal and Muslims should not be allowed to serve in the Senate). Moore is shown at the bottom of a slippery slope and next to a sign saying, “alt-right”, which is a white supremacy movement. There is also an elephant (the symbol of the Republican party) to the left of Moore with a shirt that says national GOP. The elephant is on roller skates and appears to be slipping towards Moore and the alt-right movement. The elephant

In Bennett's political cartoon published in the "Chattanooga Times Dress" addresses the idea that presidential candidate Ben Carson has yet to tell the truth in major decisions and basic facts about his life; as demonstrated by Carson's Life falling to a lie in the illustration on page 21 of The Week. The lies about a presidential candidate sounds similar to Obama's birth certificate fiasco at the beginning of his presidential career. The truth someone gets lost under the web of lies, and the concern of the election takes precedence over the truth. Why vote for the truth if it never is revealed. life falls to a lie and the election falls to power, not the priority of the citizens they would governer.…

This political cartoon satirizes allowing convicts the right to vote. There is bias in this cartoon by being against the criminal activity and by showing the positives of the Obama campaign. This will be helpful because it shows the results if felons are given the right to vote. Therefore, this political cartoon can be used as an opposing argument because the artists views are against felon…

Hillbilly Elegy, a book written by J. D. Vance, is one of the more recent New York Times bestsellers. The book itself is essentially a memoir of Vance’s (the author’s) life growing up In the Appalachian region of the United Sates. Though it is possible to provide a thorough summary on what this set of memoirs is, it will probably be made easier after it is explained what they aren’t. Despite what the title of the New York Times’ and other sources with the likes of the same title “Review: In ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ a Tough Love Analysis of the Poor Who Back Trump,” this book is not, by any means, designed to be a pure political commentary. Though one can use some examples within this book as potential explanation for Trump’s appeal within a…

Paper #4 In his book “Dog Whistle Politics”, Ian Haney Lopez shares how politicians have been silently pushing a racist agenda while they minutely express other topics. Texas political alignment began as a strong and faithful for the Democratic Party. Through time however the political alignment switched from Democratic, to Republican, to a long lasting Democratic until turning back into the Republican alignment we have today. The particular rime and the economy of Texas was a large part of what cause these changes. To dive deeper into the changes of political alignment we have to understand who was in power at the time both in the national government and state government. In this paper I will expand on the points of: how the Democratic Party was able to gain control of the state government in Texas well into the 1970s, how Texas shifted from being an overwhelmingly Democratic state to being an overwhelmingly…

A striking example of this is cartoon from 1868, entitled “This is a white man's government"5 "We regard the Reconstruction Acts (so called) of Congress as usurpations, and unconstitutional, revolutionary, and void" - Democratic Platform” by Thomas Nast. It portrays an African American soldier being stepped on by three men who make up the majority of American society. There is the southerner with a belt buckle with a confederate emblem, a rich northerner with a 5th avenue pin, and an immigrant depicted as a stereotypical Irishman. Each of them wields their votes over the soldier while a black orphanage burns in the background.…

During the 1990s, Gene Basset drew an untitled editorial cartoon to stress the importance of the controversy about economic development and preservation of the natural environment. Basset’s editorial cartoon depicts a man representing the Billboard Lobby holding a chainsaw and shouting “obstructionist” at a tree, Although Basset’s cartoon seems straightforward, it can be inferred that he was trying to stress the importance of the battle to limit or to expand billboards up and down highways. This can be inferred because of the time Basset published this editorial cartoon, 1991, and the way Basset constructed the cartoon. He also drew his untitled editorial cartoon to provide the United States some humor to help the citizens through tough times of the 1990s. The…

I have chosen Thomas Nast’s March 16, 1867 cartoon picture, “The Georgetown Election—The Negro at the Ballot Box,” as my primary source. The cartoon’s setting is Georgetown and people are in line to vote for Andrew Jackson as a president. And it features an African-American man standing in line to vote and two white men glaring at them. The African-American man is dressed up in low class clothes. He took off his hat when he puts his vote in the glass ballot box.…

In Henry Paynes political cartoon published September 28, 2015 he talks about the Volkswagen Scandal. Volkswagen is a very well known car company here in the US. As of right now, they are not doing so well. If Americans continue to deny the fact racism exists, the dilemma will persist to live on. In Birmingham, Alabama, there is a church on 16th Street that was bombed on September 15, 1963, killing four girls for racial reasons. But, if you walk outside on the sidewalk, dark brown, mahogany, and yellow bricks line the perimeter, intertwined. These bricks lie there, sturdy and woven together to remind people of the time where the unity of people of all colors defeated prejudice.…

In a series of posters, the British government utilized a variety of persuasive techniques to convince people to join the war effort. The World War II propaganda used bright colors, a clear concise message, and eye-catching images to get their message understood. The first propaganda poster is constructed to associate factory workmanship with the danger of the front lines with a strong central image. The second propaganda poster features a female factory worker and is designed to convince women to work in factories. The third propaganda poster communicates a message of support towards the military with pathos rhetoric.…
