I got the chance to experience firsthand of the closeness of the Officers at the department, there are three units in the Newport News office: the sex offender unit, mental illness, and general population. Each Officer is able to go to each other to ask for assistance on paperwork as well as trading shifts for intake. I have also had the pleasure to experience how helping the Officers are with the client. The start of my internship I was under supervision of Officer Baines, my first assignment was to witness a case opening. A case opening is the first initial meeting between the Officer and the client, the client has to answer several routine questioners which have been created by the department, and the client and the Officer create a relationship.…

We make a lot of referrals because most people come to the hospital when they are very sick, have an addiction, or a mental illness. Once they are treated and no longer need medical attention, they are referred out of the hospital and into the community. For example, most elderly patients who are 65 and older, often get referred to sub-acute rehab, skilled nursing facilities, home care, Adult Protective Services, hospice care, or palliative care.…

Maltreated children are at risk for significant psychological and physical health symptoms. These include anxiety, depression, suicide, impulsivity, hyperactivity, interpersonal problems, hyper arousal, and dissociation (Lawson, 2009). Unfortunately, many families with children who face challenges such as child maltreatment have been investigated by the local Department of Social Services for incidents which may be minor or severe. Families in Maryland who experience child maltreatment such as leaving a child unattended, lack of food supply, and poor parental support have an option called Alternative Response (AR). The Department of Human Resources collaborated with stakeholders, advocates, experts, community service providers, and local social services department offices known as the Alternative Response Advisory Council to create Maryland's AR program (Rock, 2014).…
