AL-QAIDA Al-Qaida or the base in Arabic is an international terrorist organization founded in 1988 by Osama Bin Laden, Abdullah Azzam and Ayman al-Zawahiri. Al-Qaida was initially formed by men from all over the world and many of these members were veterans of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. The goal of Al-Qaida is to recruit, finance, and train mujahedeen to start a jihad and rid western influence and replace governments with fundamentalist Islamic regimes following Sharia Law. Much of the ideals Al-Qaida follows is interpretations of the writings from Sayyid Qutb of Egypt (Gerges, 2011). In some cases suicide bombers have been used without the suicide bomber being aware of their impending death. In Iraq a man was hired to drive a commercial truck transporting goods, upon arrival of the predetermined destination the truck exploded throwing the driver out of the front window of the truck and somehow survived. The man was arrested and imprisoned until it was determined he had no prior connections to Al-Qaida. Many of Al-Qaida’s suicide bombers willingly go to their deaths expecting entry into heaven and great rewards based on their religious beliefs. Unfortunately a large number of Al-Qaida’s low level followers are illiterate and have never read the Koran so they are completely reliant on someone else’s interpretation and readings. The low level followers are easy to manipulate using false readings, teachings and misinterpretations but saying they are the true words of the Koran. Another large part of the followers of Al-Qaida become involved for financial reasons. There are many men in the Middle East who are poor and are looking for ways to feed and clothe their families. Al-Qaida pays large sums of money to followers who are willing to fight for them and even larger sums of money who are willing to become a suicide
